Westfield's Top Ten Comics for January 2011

10 Things I Find Reasonable About January ‘11 Comics (and a couple I don’t)
by KC Carlson
A funny thing happened as I was preparing to write this column…
I’m short on time these days, as I’m preparing for a trip away from
home, and I’m attempting to get about a bazillion things done before I
leave (you know the drill). So I decided to multi-task and do my
pre-writing research flip though Previews while I was watching the Jon
Stewart/Stephen Colbert Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. At first,
reading through the latest monthly solicitations while chilling out to
The Roots and John Legend was working out fine.
6. Archie: 50 Times an American Icon: Similar to the Hero
Initiative’s previous Ultimate Spider-Man #100 Project, this new
collection brings together over 50 contemporary comic artists (often in
surprising combinations) to celebrate the historic Archie Wedding (1
groom, 2 brides, and all “imaginary”). Charged with drawing their
version of Archie and his friends on a blank Archie #600 template, the
artists have instead gone beyond the Archie wedding to depict the
characters as superheroes (George Pérez, Mark McKenna, and more), rock
stars (Cliff Chiang, Ben Dewey), and icons (“three on a straw” by John
Romita Sr. inked by Todd McFarlane!). Plus, Joseph Michael Linsner draws
Betty, and we witness the first professional work of new 17-year-old
artist Rachel Ordway when she teams up with her dad Jerry. Plus, there
is an actual wedding cover as Jughead marries ???! Other contributors
include Sam Keith, Bill Sienkiewicz, and even the Archie wedding artist
himself — Stan Goldberg! Plus, you get the history-making Archie #600
story! All proceeds go to the Hero Initiative, which assists comics
creators in need.
(Vu: Archie has the right idea, regarding making their comics
available the same day of release. DC and Marvel should really pay
attention to what's going on. I would love a better software/store and I
would like to see it go one step-further and reduce the prices of the
digital version. After all, you still can't give a copy to your friends
or re-sell it later on.)
Archie Comics Goes Day-and-Date Digital
by Kevin Mahadeo, Staff Writer
In a major move, Archie Comics today announced their upcoming
Day-and-Date Digital initiative -- a landmark move beginning April 1
that makes the company's weekly comics output available for purchase
both in print and digitally simultaneously.
Readers will still be able to purchase new comics in print at their
local comic shops every week as per usual. However, the exact same
comics will also be available for digital download for $1.99 each
through the Archie Comics app from iVerse -- available on the iPhone,
iPod Touch and the iPad. While Archie and other comic companies have
previously offered one or two issues of a comic to readers in print and
digitally with the same release date, this marks the first time a
company's entire weekly publishing output will be available in both
mediums on the same day.
You mentioned that you feel the digital market can help print sales.
Once someone reads a few issues of a comic online, they might be more
willing to go pick up, say, the trade afterward. Do you see that as
something likely to happen on a regular basis?
Archie CEO Jon Goldwater: I do. I really look to the digital format
to support all sorts of print initiatives. I definitely look at it in
supporting the trade sales, without a doubt. If you download a series of
books that are available as a trade, I think you'd ultimately go out
and buy the trade, without a doubt. I think this is all one big support
group. All this is, is another format, another avenue for us to get our
books out there. I don't look at this as undercutting any one aspect of
the business at all. It's another way to provide our brand and sell our
brand. That's all this is.

Archie Teams Up with Hero Initiative
by CBR News Team
Official Press Release
50 new Archie covers by 50 great artists will benefit Hero Initiative
Archie and the whole Riverdale gang certainly are heroes. Now they’re joining forces to aid cartoonists in need.
Archie Comics is teaming up with the Hero Initiative, the charity
dedicated to helping comic creators in medical or financial need, for
an amazing artistic extravaganza involving the premier issue of the
world-renowned Archie wedding series, Archie #600. Archie Comics has
printed 50 blank-covered copies of the landmark book, and Hero will
have 50 stellar artists do original Archie covers on the special
edition books. The originals will be auctioned off at a later date to
benefit Hero, and a book will be published, collecting all 50 covers.
Superstar artists such as Neal Adams, Darwyn Cooke, Sam Kieth, Jerry
Ordway, George Pérez, John Romita, Tim Sale and more are all
contributing to the project, “Archie Covers: Fifty Times an American
Icon.” More artistic surprises are yet in store, as artists from the
animation world and even underground comics will be making
contributions as well!
"Hey, Archie Comics is one of the very few companies I've never
worked for and any opportunity to draw the lovely Betty and Veronica is
one I can't possibly pass up, especially as it also benefits the Hero
Initiative. And, considering my reputation as a super-team artist, how
could I resist drawing the Riverdale gang in their superhero persona?"
said legendary Marvel/DC artist and Hero board member George Pérez.
“Archie Comics is committed to supporting those who have spent their
lives as the cornerstone of the comics industry. We are thrilled to be
working with the Hero Initiative on this project,” remarks Co-CEO Jon
Goldwater. “The covers have been remarkable and we can’t wait to see
what the remaining artists have in store for their edition of the Hero
covers for Archie #600.”
Each original cover will be auctioned off via eBay.com at a future
date. A release date for the book is also pending. Stay tuned! You will
not want to miss out on these amazing once-in-a-lifetime covers!
