Growing up with a Boricua comic book legend
    By David Pérez

    (excerpt)

In the storied list of accomplished Puerto Ricans, there’s one Boricua who has earned his fame in a field that is, perhaps, not as widely appreciated as, say, film or medicine. His name: George Pérez. His field: Comic book artist.

Born and raised in the South Bronx, George is an industry legend with over forty years producing jaw-dropping work on some of comic’s biggest titles, including Avengers, Justice League, Crisis on Infinite Earths, Wonder Woman, and his co-creation, The New Teen Titans.

In 1975, along with Bill Mantlo, he also co-created the industry’s first Puerto Rican superhero: White Tiger, a master martial artist who appeared in "Sons of the Tiger", a serialized action-adventure strip published in Marvel's long-running Deadly Hands of Kung Fu magazine. White Tiger’s secret identity was Hector Ayala, who was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico and then moved to New York where, as a student at Empire State College, he transformed into White Tiger through the power of Jade Tiger amulets, which gave him enhanced marital arts powers.

    Dear friends,

My memoir, Wow! (11B Press) has arrived. Priced at $10, the 128-page "memoirito" is an accessible and fun read. Click here to order.

Better yet, come to my Book Launch at the historic Nuyorican Poets Café, where you'll enjoy an evening of friendship, good music and laughter as I read about growing up in the Millbrook Houses in the 1960's, navigating my way through a tough neighborhood and an even tougher Catholic school. Afterwards, I'll be happy to sign books and do that thing called mingling.

If you don't live in New York, please pass this on to anyone you know who does!

Wow! will also be available the next day, March 24, at the East Harlem Café on 104th Street and Lexington Ave. The event, "An Evening with Maria Aponte & Friends," features a poetry performance by Maria Aponte with musical accompaniment by Chacho Ramirez and Dwight Brewster. Special guests are myself and poet Veronica Golos (Vocabulary of Silence, Red Hen Press). The festivities begin at 7 pm. Admission is $5.

Please visit my website for information about other planned readings, as well excerpts and audio clips. Please click here.

    Advance Praise:

"David Pérez's amazing memoirito brings a refreshing humanity to the Latino experience. Yet his coming-of-age story is universal in scope: lovely, funny, rich and evocative."
    - Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez, New York Times bestselling author

"With his unsparing eye for detail and dialogue, and his big-hearted approach to even the toughest circumstances, Pérez proves that you can, indeed, go home again. And it’s even better the second time around. Kudos!"
     - Cristina Garcia, author of The Lady Matador’s Hotel

"Pérez weaves a deep, clear portrait of a time and place, blasting away negative stereotypes along the way. An important work from a highly skilled and original artist."

    Hello everyone,

My book is set to launch! It's been a great journey writing it, and having the cover and illustrations drawn by my brother George, the acclaimed comic book artist, has been an added blessing.

11B Press is a new publisher and Wow! is their first book. Yet another blessing.

I'll be in New York from March 15 - April 13 and have some readings in the works. I'll keep you all posted. Besides the East Coast this spring (mostly in NY), I'd like to do the Southwest in the summer, and the West Coast in the fall.

If you have contacts with a venue that might be interested in a reading/signing, please let me know. I also like the idea of doing writer's salons in people's homes, where I can read from Wow! and then have a lively and fun discussion.

Information about Wow! - including excerpts and audio clips - can be found on my website (click here, or on above link). When the book is ready to be ordered, you'll be the first to know.

    Hasta luego!
    David

    News: The Other Pérez

    November 16, 2005 06:10 pm
     From George Pérez
DAVID PEREZ (Nov 2005), published in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY
I just wanted to share this with my fans because I'm busting with pride. This ad appeared on page 69 of the Nov. 18, 2005 edition of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY (although I'm assuming it's appearing in other magazines as well). The gentleman in the ad is none other than my kid brother David Pérez. David is an aspiring actor and writer (his wife Veronica Golos is a published poet) and I had no idea he had gotten a print ad job until I opened the magazine. It was a good thing that I was already sitting down cause it really stunned the heck out of me. David didn't turn his attention to the arts until relatively late in life and has already done some stage work and is working on a semi-autobiographical book about growing up in the South Bronx. I'm so happy that he's living his dream. With my wife being a dance instructor in ballroom and Middle Eastern dance, this family is getting pretty well represented in the arts. Now, if only one of us could play a musical instrument.
