George Perez's Sirens
by Duy
In 2013, George Perez left his exclusive contract at DC Comics, citing the desire for more creative freedom, and signed with Boom! Studios. In 2014, what was supposed to be his first series, Sirens (originally titled She-Devls), debuted. Sirens is like Perez's previous creator-owned work Crimson Plague in the sense that every character in it is based on a real person, but that's pretty much where the similarities end. Crimson Plague was a solo book; Sirens was a team book. Crimson Plague asked for fans to submit their photos so Perez could use them as models; Sirens uses Perez's friends, most notably a number of cosplayers whom he cast as the leads. And of course, Crimson Plague never finished; Sirens did.

George Perez's first-ever custom CGC label
posted Jul 12, 2015, 3:25 PM by Vu Nguyen
From cgccomics.com

Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) and Boom! Studios have teamed up
with George Perez to create the first-ever custom art CGC label. Perez
hand-sketched Sirens series for a certification label that will be available just in time for encapsulation with Sirens #4,
scheduled for release by Boom! Studios on July 8 th at Comic Con International — San Diego.
Given full artistic control of the label, Perez created a stunning design of Sirens ’ seven heroines, who travel across space and time to save the universe.
“Not being able to choose among my Sirens children, I
opted to draw all seven of them. It was interesting doing so without any
reference in front me,” Perez says of the experience.
Sirens #4 can be purchased at SDCC at the Boom! booth
(#2229) and submitted directly to CGC at booth #901. Customers can
purchase the Perez label in CGC’s
Blue Universal Designation for an additional $5 fee. It is also
available in the Yellow Signature Series label, if the book is signed
and witnessed.
Previous issues of George Perez Sirens are also eligible for encapsulation with the Perez custom label, upon request.
We’re thrilled to be able to launch this custom label program with
an icon of George Perez’s stature and a publisher with the innovative
spirit of Boom!”
said CGC Director of Operations Harshen Patel. “Right from the
start, they shared our excitement about this opportunity to offer
something entirely new to
comic book collectors.”

Kin compares Richard Corben to George Perez

I’m all tuckered out this
morning from shovelling the pile left by the snow plow at home so that
we could get out of our driveway and go to work and then shovelling out
my parking space here at the store, and I still have to work all day.
Managing a small business is so much fun. I almost read all the comic
books that I wanted to from last week’s new releases. One of these days
I’ll manage to do that.
(excerpt)
Rat God #1 - Few
artists find success writing their own comics. Take George Perez's
Sirens as an example. The first issue was so over written that only a
few fans bought the second issue. Here we have Richard Corben using his
signature style to tell a tale involving an old Haida mythological
creature. This issue was kind of confusing but I loved the art and the
sparse narrative made it enjoyable at least. I will definitely read the
next issue.

Boom To Take Another Scalp From DC Comics Next Week
Posted on November 27, 2014 by Rich Johnston
Boom have made quite a few headlines over the last couple of years recruiting both experienced, high level talent like George Pérez, Brian Stelfreeze, JG Jones and Grant Morrison alongside hot, up-and-coming creators who might normally gravitate to Image with their original projects like James Tynion IV, Justin Jordan, Frank Barbiere, Cullen Bunn and Marguerite Bennett.
We’re still waiting to find out exactly what Jones and Morrison have brought to Boom, but it’s come to my attention that next week Boom is planning another high profile creator reveal.
While I don’t have a name yet, I’ve heard it’s someone working on one
of DC’s top-selling titles… and the creator has never worked with Boom
before.

Perez details first-ever national signing tour

Okay,
the wait is almost over. After a pretty long spell of preparation,
challenges and long blissful work hours, my new book SIRENS will be
making its debut in a special variant edition this weekend at the
Baltimore Comic Con. The con organizer, Marc Nathan, was the gentleman
who set me up with BOOM!, so this seemed like the perfect way to thank
him.
To celebrate the book’s official mass release
on September 17th, I am going on my first-ever national signing tour.
Six stores and two conventions in two weeks! And all but one stop will
include an exclusive variant cover! Here is my schedule (some of the
signing times could be extended if attendance warrants):

Jennifer Nguyen (Mazu) both of whom appear on the double covers that
form the main image of the regular edition. Other models that will
appear in upcoming issues may attend, but nothing's confirmed yet.

for future autograph opportunities
PITTSBURGH COMICON 2014 (26-28 Sep 2014)
Monroeville, Pennsylvania
Saturday & Sunday,
September 27th-28th
Pittsburgh Comic Con. While there will be no
variant cover specific to this show, model April Hunter (Agony) will be a
guest there as well and will be more than happy to autograph any
version you put in front of her.
|
Tuesday, September 30th
Tate's Comics, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, 5 pm – 7pm, This variant actually
will solo-feature April Hunter as Agony on the cover and the lovely
model plans to be with me to sign this edition as well
Wednesday, October 1st
Coliseum of Comics, Sanford, FL, 4 pm – 6pm.
This final stop is at my local comic shop and the variant will spotlight
the Sirens mystic Fanisha. My wife Phoenicia Flynn (Fanisha) will be
accompanying me to autograph the books along with several other cast
members who have consented to pop into the store and autograph copies,
including April Hunter yet again! This will likely be the largest
gathering of cast members for the tour and a fitting finish to what
promises to be a very exciting—and exhausting— experience.
See you all soon!

George Pérez Embarks on First Nationwide Signing Tour for Sirens
September 2, 2014
Award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios is excited to announce that comics’ legend George Pérez will be embarking on his first nationwide signing tour to promote his new original series, George Pérez’s Sirens.
Pérez will be visiting six different comic shops and three conventions
in seven states across the country to meet fans and sign copies of his
first original comic book series in over a decade. Appearing alongside
the luminary creator at several of the events will be the real-life
friends and fans who inspired the Sirens themselves.
As an intergalactic force enslaves planets across the galaxy, the
legendary team known only as the Sirens must reunite to save the
galaxy—but is that even possible when the Sirens themselves don’t even
remember who they are? And the rest of the universe only remembers them
as…villains? A six-issue bi-monthly miniseries featuring your new
favorite comic book team, written and drawn by the master himself, George Pérez (Wonder Woman, JLA Vs. Avengers) begins his greatest story yet.
“This is gonna be so much fun,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon.
“George has never gone on a signing tour before, so this a really
unique opportunity for his fan base. Spanning the course of two full
weeks, George will be visiting numerous comic shops and conventions,
meeting fans from all over the country, and introducing them to his
newest work, Sirens. A huge thanks goes out to all the
retailers and convention organizers that made this possible. And of
course, the biggest thanks of all goes out to George for agreeing to
pack up and travel all over the U.S.!”
George Pérez will appear at the following locations and dates:
- September 5-7, Baltimore Comic-Con, Baltimore, Md.
- September 17, 6-8pm, Collector’s Paradise, Winnetka, Calif.
- September 18, 6-8pm, Keith’s Comics, Dallas, Texas
- September 19-21, Cincinnati Comic Expo, Cincinnati, Ohio
- September 22, 6-8pm, Larry’s Comics, Lowell, Mass.
- September 25, 11am-1pm, Third Eye Comics, Annapolis, Md.
- September 27-28,
Steel City Con, Pittsburgh, Pa. (Vu: please note that they are referring to PITTSBURGH COMICON 2014)
- September 30, 5-7pm, Tate’s Comics, Lauderhill, Fla.
- October 1, 4-6pm, Coliseum of Comics, Sanford, Fla.
George Perez’s Sirens #1 comes out in comic shops on September 17.

SIRENS Call to Legendary George Perez for Creator-Owned Series at BOOM!
by Chris Arrant, Newsarama Contributor
Date: 11 July 2014 Time: 02:15 PM ET
This September, the iconic writer/artist George Pérez eschews the
worlds of Marvel and DC to create his own heroes, villains, and epics in
the new series, George Pérez’ Sirens. Taking his passion for storytelling and creation as seen in everything from New Teen Titans to Wonder Woman to the Justice League and the Avengers and blending it with his own love of action, diverse eras and female characters, Sirens follows
a titular team of disgraced female heroes who are called back in action
to save the same people who turned against them.
Culled from various eras and locales in world history, the heroines of
Sirens strike upon Pérez’ diverse love of fiction and also a little
support from friends and family – the writer/artist is basing virtually
all of the characters in Sirens after people he knows, including his wife Carol. Unlike other projects of Pérez’ in recent memory, Sirens strikes home as it’s the beginning of a new era outside of Marvel and DC and on his own creations.
Newsarama: George, what excites you about doing Sirens?
George Pérez: Well, the chance to write and illustrate
my own stories is definitely a big plus, but I think the greatest
thrill for me is using so many of my friends, fans and even family
members as cast members. This makes it more of an artistic challenge for
me and the idea that is causing so much personal excitement for so many
others is a real thrill. I tried it once with the unfortunately
short-lived Crimson Plague PLAGUE in the late 90s, but that was
a book I was financing myself. This time BOOM! is handling all the
marketing and promotion stuff. I can just sit down and be as creative as
my imagination and ability will allow.

WHY WE LOVE IT: The name George Pérez should say it all, but we are
beyond excited to work with one of comics' living masters on his own
original title. He's worked on great female characters like Wonder Woman
and Scarlet Witch, but this, a team of female heroes of his own
creation, had us swooning.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: It's a scifi adventure story that spans time and
space, featuring a team of female heroes that kick butt across the
universe. If you like strong female scifi characters like Battlestar
Galactica's Starbuck, Star Wars' Princess Leia, and Alien's Ripley,
you'll find a lot to love about GEORGE PÉREZ'S SIRENS!
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: As an intergalactic force enslaves planets across the

This is the listing for "George Perez's Sirens #1". Speaking as a
collector, can't say that I'm thrilled at so many variant covers...
especially because those incentive covers are really expensive if you
are not a dealer.

WHY WE LOVE IT: The name George Pérez should say it
all, but we are beyond excited to work with one of comics’ living
masters on his own original title. He’s worked on great female
characters like Wonder Woman and Scarlet Witch, but this, a team of
female heroes of his own creation, had us hooked.
WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT: It’s a sci-fi adventure story that
spans time and space, featuring a team of female heroes that kick butt
across the universe. If you like strong female sci-fi characters like Battlestar Galactica’s Starbuck, Star Wars’ Princess Leia, and Alien’s Ripley, you’ll find nine reasons to love GEORGE PÉREZ’S SIRENS!
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: As an intergalactic force enslaves
planets across the galaxy, the legendary team known only as the Sirens
must reunite to save it—but is that even possible when the Sirens
themselves don’t even remember who they are? And the rest of the
universe only remembers them as…villains? A six-issue, bi-monthly
miniseries featuring your new favorite comic book team, written and
drawn by the master himself, George Pérez ( Wonder Woman, JLA Vs. Avengers) begins his greatest story yet.
Scroll down for all six covers, and then many more solicitations!

An Addendum to the She-Devils Casting Call

SHE-DEVILS #1 (2014)
Boom! Studios
AN ADDENDUM TO MY CASTING CALL
I've been getting a wonderfully large number of volunteers and so many
have already sent your photos, and for that I am grateful. There are a
few specific types I'm still looking for, though and, while I can just
simply create the faces, I'd still like to get a chance to use as many
live models as I can, even for parts that may not be all that glamorous
or even likable.
Now, at the
risk of spoiling the story for anyone--although these requests will no
doubt elicit more confusion than clarification--I currently have need of
a couple of Japanese Samurais, young Japanese geishas.
I'm
also looking for an African-American woman over 30 for a small part
similar to the role Viola Davis played in THE HELP. I'm also looking for
a black male to be in a one or two panel scene with her.
These
last two roles may be the toughest roles to fill due to the sensitive
nature. I can understand a modern black woman being adverse to
portraying a maid and for a black man to be portrayed in a similar
function. However, the roles are not going to be negative or
condescending portrayals--just going for some historical context in the
storyline which has a scene in the 50s era South..
Of course,
some of you are being cast in rather unsavory roles-- many at your own
request, so maybe I'm being a little over-cautious in the name of
political correctness, but I just needed to make myself clear that all
this is being done for entertainment and the desire to involve my fans
in some of that enjoyment, if they want to. The parts mentioned are
little more than cameos and could easily be filled by fictional faces,
but I will leave that totally up to all of you. No offense meant and
none will be taken.
As with all the other casting, the deadline
for photos is January 31st, by which time I will have to use whomever I
have in my list for the first SHE-DEVILS story arc. Thanks for your
attention, consideration and understanding

Casting Call for George Perez's She-Devils

SHE-DEVILS #1 (2014)
Boom! Studios
WHO WANTS TO BE A COMIC BOOK CHARACTER?
CASTING CALL FOR GEORGE PEREZ’S SHE-DEVILS!
Hey there, everybody! As many of you know I am currently working on a
creator-owned series for BOOM! Studios called SHE-DEVILS. After many
months of setbacks due to my medical issues and the time it took to
develop the first story arc, I am finally ready to begin penciling.
As some of you may also know, as in my previous short-lived
creator-owned project CRIMSON PLAGUE, my desire is to populate this
series with as many friends and fans as the story will allow. While I
have already cast my lead characters and several other parts, there is
still a need for many more roles to be filled and, thus, this open
“casting call”.
I am looking for characters, male and female, of all shapes, sizes,
ethnicity and age. Some parts will be fairly significant; others will be
little more than cameos. Some may have their real names used (if
agreeable); others may be playing characters that by plot necessity will
have fictional names. Most will be portraying humans; some may be the
basic models for aliens. Some will be heroic; some will be among the
vilest of villains. Some will live; some won’t be so lucky.
And, of course, everyone will be drawn by me. It’s my way of letting my
fans in on the fun, and I am particularly hopeful that this will
inspire the cosplayers among you to dress up as your character at
upcoming conventions. The idea of a big photo shoot with as many live
SHE-DEVILS characters gathered together really excites me and watching
fans and friends being asked to autograph copies of the books they
appear in is my way of sharing a bit of the celebrity spotlight that
I’ve been privileged to enjoy for four decades.
So, for those of you who may be interested, and even for those whom I
have already approached, here’s what I will need from each of you.
Photos. Plenty, plenty of photos. Especially headshots, like animation
character sheets, wherein you provide as many expressions, moods and
angles as you can manage. Face forward, profile, three-quarter shots,
looking left, right, up and down, even looking to the rear. Happy, sad,
angry, worried, confused, surprised, playful, passive, assertive.
Smiling, frowning, sneering, screaming, gritted teeth, pursed lips,
whistling, grimacing. I think you get the idea. Every emotional and
dramatic expression you can think of.
I know this may be asking a lot, but I really do want to have as big a
library as possible so that every drawing of each respective character
bears at least some resemblance to the model An acceptable alternative
would be video for those who have done some action stuff in that format.
And for those who have their own websites with suitable photos, a link
would also be perfectly acceptable.
Now, please understand that, however many responses I get, there is no
guarantee that I will be able to use everyone, or even a majority of
those who wish to be part of this. However, if the first story arc is
successful, I will need characters for a follow-up, so don’t fret that
you’ll be totally left out.
Also, this is not a paying gig. The only compensation for any of you is
the hopeful thrill of seeing yourself as part of a comic book drawn
with as much tender loving care as I can manage.
So, if any of this does interest you, please send links to photos,
vidcaps, videos or websites to my email at gpzpacesetter[a]mac.com.
For those who wish to send photos or videos by regular mail, please
contact me by e-mail requesting my mailing address (I may open a PO Box
specifically for this). You can also send me messages through my
Facebook pages but please understand that sometimes messages get lost
among the many others I receive here.
So, that’s my spiel. To coin an old, but now appropriate, phrase, see you in the funny papers!

SHE-DEVILS #1 (2014)
Boom! Studios

Okay! It's now official!
The title of my new series for BOOM! Studios is SHE-DEVILS (taking the
title from a one-shot fan comic I did just as I was turning pro in
1974.) This is the first promo art spotlighting the nine lead
characters. Just as I did with CRIMSON PLAGUE years ago, I'm using real
people as my models and inspiration.
Beyond the characters shown here, I've already enlisted a good number
of friends, fans and members of my extended family to appear as
characters in this series and will likely be needing to ask for more,
especially those in the cosplay community. I'm imagining a big
SHE-DEVILS photo shoot some time in the future with everybody playing
his or her own comic book alter ego!
Pictured here are:
Top Row: Bombshell (Meg Taylor), Ammo (Camille Elizabeth Bishop) Barrage (Miracole Burns)
Center Row, Agony (April Hunter) Highness (Margie Vizcarra Cox),Figurine (Chan Graves), Kaje (Akira Lane)
Bottom center: Fanisha (Phoenicia Flynn), Backround Interface (Sherita Dunbar)
I am definitely in the market for more cast members, so if you're
interested and I haven't spoken to yet (or even if I did), please feel
free to send me a private message. Please note that, while I would love
to use everyone who wants to be in this series, there's no way I can fit
everyone, so please don't take it personally if I don't use you.
This should be FUN!!
