This year was another in a decade brimming with awesome talent and fiercely entertaining work from all areas of the comic book industry. A small number of staffers attempting to identify one or two titles as the best of a stellar year like 2008 would be a disservice to CBR readers, so this year we polled every single CBR contributor to create our list of the 100 Best Comics of 2008, which we will unveil twenty items at-a-time over the next five days.

If you missed items #100-61, check them out: Part 1, Part II.

    45. FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF 3 WORLDS
    Written by Geoff Johns
Illustrated by George Pérez & Scott Koblish
    Publisher: DC Comics

One of the better series spinning out of “Final Crisis,” Pérez’s artwork is better than ever and Johns’ depiction of Superboy-Prime as an annoying, self-absorbed super-brat is pitch-perfect. With the teaming up of three different Legions of Super-Heroes from throughout continuity and the return of Sodam Yat, the conclusion of this miniseries is something no fan will want to miss. - Staff Writer Jami Philbreck

I defy anyone to come up with a better pitch than Superboy-Prime going one-thousand years into the future to murder every member of all three Legions of Super-Heroes in the most horribly violent ways imaginable, as depicted by the preeminent superhero artist of the age, George Pérez. Talk about "meta." - Staff Writer Andy Khouri

    DON'T FEAR THE LEGION
Wed, August 20th, 2008 at 2:32PM PST by Timothy Callahan, Staff Writer

DC's version of the Dirty Dozen

In February of 2007, I met with Julian Darius, publisher of my first book, and threw out some ideas for a follow-up. I suggested a bunch of things that I thought would make interesting book topics and ended by saying, "but what I'd really like to do is a book about 'The Legion of Super-Heroes."

    (excerpt)

From the looks of "Final Crisis: The Legion of Three Worlds," Johns will cherry pick one Legion team from the Reboot era and another from the Threeboot era and combine them with his own version of the post-Levitz/Giffen team as seen recently in "Action Comics." If you like what he does, jump into the Legion with the above list as your guide. There's plenty of future history to go around. Don't be shy. There's no reason to fear the Legion.

In addition to writing reviews and columns for COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, Timothy Callahan is the writer of "Grant Morrison: The Early Years" and editor of the upcoming "Teenagers from the Future" anthology. More of his thoughts on comics can be seen every day at the Geniusboy Firemelon blog.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more,
Or close the wall up with rebooted dead!
... I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot!
Follow your spirit; and upon this charge
Cry 'Long Live the Legion! Annotate on!'

Confessions of a Comic Book Guy—This N’That Column
by Steve Bennett August 20, 2008

Confessions of a Comic Book Guy is a weekly column by retailer Steve Bennett of Super-Fly Comics and Games in Yellow Springs, Ohio.  This week, Bennett talks about news from the retail front lines, Arabian comics, and Mr. Freedom.

The cost of gas has been limiting my trips to Super-Fly Comics to every other week but there are plenty of good comic shops in the Cincinnati area.  Just three minutes away there’s the small but excellent Comics & Games, and when I feel like a drive just 20 minutes away in Florence, Kentucky there’s the spacious and well stocked Comic Book World.

Since I’ve been doing most of my retailing by remote these days Tad and Tony wanted me to pass along a couple of their observations from the frontlines:

    1)  Secret Invasion may outsell Final Crisis but for us the Crisis spin-offs do much better than the Invasion ones, even though they cost a dollar more.  This is partially due to the fact that it’s easier to give the file customers getting Crisis all the related miniseries, which they generally buy without complaint.  But given their sheer volume, you really can’t do that with the Secret Invasion tie-ins…

AIR #1 (MR) - A new Vertigo title is always worth a try for readers who like mature comic stories. The Vertigo website provides a preview you may download here.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #568 - This is the start of the six-part “New Ways to Die” where Norman Osborn’s Thunderbolts come after Spider-Man. Also, ASM #568 sees the return of artist, John Romita Jr.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #41 - You might be tired of me pointing this out, but I have to say it again: Ed Brubaker’s Captain America is the single best ongoing superhero comic currently published. Pick up this or any issue and find out why.

FINAL CRISIS LEGION OF THREE WORLDS #1 - Here is a story that has been bubbling on the backburner of the DC Universe for some time, and now Geoff Johns and George Perez are going to turn up the heat. Multiple Legions of Superheroes, the Timetrapper, and Superboy-Prime are in Crisis in the 31st century.

FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS #1 (Cover A) (Aug 2008)

    L3W Pre-Annotations part 1
    Friday, August 15, 2008

Here's part 1 of my "Legion of Three Worlds" pre-annotations. Up first, the list of Pre-Zero Hour Legionnaires with their creators and first appearances. Part 2 will be the Post-Zero Hour Legion, and Part 3 will be the current Post-Infinite Crisis Legion. This is so I don't make the L3W annotations bigger than they are already likely to be. Anyone appearing who's not on these lists, I'll cover in the body of the annotations.

    Some notes:

    1. For purposes of this list, I'm assuming that the character was created equally by the writer and penciller (which may not be the case every time). Exception: Dawnstar was created by Grell and Levitz, though Grell left the book right before he drew the issue. And I'm not counting where the character was suggested in a "Bits of Legionnaire Business" column, unless you think I should.
    2. I'm also assuming that a character's creator remains the same regardless of which continuity he/she came from - so for example, all the different Garth Ranzzes from pre-Crisis, post-Zero Hour, and the current version, were all created by Binder and Plastino.
    3. I'm not a masochist - I'm going to use resources that are already out there. And for this list, I have to thank Nightcrawler over at Legion World for putting together a list of "every Legionnaire, ever" since that's what George Perez has said he wanted to do. That's where this list starts.
    4. However, from that list, I'm excluding those pre-ZH instances where villains joined (like Universo, the LSV, Command Kid, and Dynamo Boy) or when people were "allowed" to join for some reason (the Murran spies, Proty and Comet in human form) while keeping in the Honorary Legionnaires and Reservists.
    5. I'm also excluding the Imaginary Story/Alternate Universe/Elseworlds/animated versions of the Legion (which means no Adult Legion joiners).

There's going to be a LOT of people in this series. L3W inker Scott Koblish said on LegionWorld that "I'm pretty sure George will get 'em all in there. The first issue has cameos galore, quite a number of them not even listed in the big list at the head of this thread, and the second issue blows the doors off the first. Hang tight Legion fans!"

The past, present and future of one of DC's most beloved superteams...

At a convention known for its fans' devotion and passion, Legion of Superheroes devotees are truly in a league of their own.

Throughout Saturday's "Legion of Superheroes Panel," fans from across the globe shared their personal connections to the DC superteam with panelists, Paul Levitz, Mike Grell, Keith Giffen, Colleen Doran, Geoff Johns, Tom Bierbaum, and Mary Bierbaum, as well as questions about the varying specifics of a series that has one of the broadest mythos of any in the comic universe.

Being such a beloved series, its no surprise that many in attendance were extremely concerned about the future of the series. Johns let out a minor spoiler, revealing part of Una's character arc: "You turn the page and she's multiplied into like a hundred of her and she says 'I don't know how I ever got anything done with just three of me,'" he added. "She's going to be called 'Duplicate Damsel'."

Continuing, Legion of Three Worlds writer Johns certainly tried to ease any fears that his run would be lacking anyone's favorite character, asserting that George Perez, "wants to draw every Legionnaire ever." Unfortunately, the Superpets will not be making an appearance.

FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS #2 (Sep 2008)
FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS #3 (Oct 2008)
Last summer, DC Comics writer Geoff Johns surprised readers with a little story he called Sinestro Corps War, juggling a multitude of villains and ring-wearing heroes in a space-based epic that became one of DC's most successful events of 2007.

It may be a year later, but it looks like Johns is up to his surprise-pulling tricks again.

This year, Johns will join with artist George Perez to tell another epic story about a team of ring-wearing heroes in Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds, the oversized five-issue mini-series that begins in August.

While we talked to Johns in detail (both here and here) about the characters he's re-introducing in Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds, we're checking back again as the release date draws near and Final Crisis is underway (just as we did Monday with the other Final Crisis mini-series set for August, Final Crisis: Revelations.

And this time, Johns spilled about how this series will reverberate into the coming year, confirming that not only will questions be answered about the Legion, their lightning rod and that rascal Superboy-Prime, but readers of Green Lantern might also want to take note.

Newsarama: First, Geoff, let's talk about the scope of Legion of 3 Worlds. We talked a lot in the past about the Legion characters, but will this comic play into other things going on the in the DC Universe?

Geoff Johns: Legion of 3 Worlds, while an epic on its own, sets up a lot of things for 2009 in the DCU. It’s grown out of my work on Action Comics, Justice Society of America, Green Lantern, The Flash, Teen Titans and Infinite Crisis. It’s strange, looking at it in the big picture. It’s a culmination in a sense for me and leads me to the next level and the next books.

    BY JENNIFER M. CONTINO
This August Legion of Super-Hero fans are going to have the best of both worlds -- or maybe three worlds! Superstars Geoff Johns and George Perez team to present Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds, a five-part tale that rocks the 31st century to it's core as the Legion of Super-Heroes are pit against their longtime adversary Time Trapper, and his ultimate weapon, Superboy-Prime. Perez is known for his painstakingly detailed artwork that made him a comics household name when he was drawing the New Teen Titans. Perez told THE PULSE he's wanted to work on the Legion of Super-Heroes for years, and is glad to finally have this opportunity.

Prior to this newest crisis threatening the cosmos, Perez teamed with Geoff Johns for a portion of 2005's Infinite Crisis. But his most famous crisis work -- up to this point in time, of course, has to be 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths. Prior to this point, although a big fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes, Perez had only covered one of DC's oldest superteams a few times in the '80s, and featured them as guest stars here and there. He never worked on the ongoing series or a miniseries specifically about this team. However, the artist is no stranger to having to illustrate a multitude of characters in the confines of any given story. With his last assignment, The Brave and the Bold, Perez drew dozens of heroes and villains each issue. What sets Perez apart from the pack, though, is that each of his characters looks distinctive and unique -- not just like talking heads with different colored hair or masks.

    LEGION OF THREE WORLDS #1
In this exclusive sneak peek, get your first look at DC's 'Final Crisis' spinoff event by superstars Geoff Johns and George Perez!
By Kevin Mahadeo and Andy Serwin Posted 05/07/08

The Legion of Super-Heroes stand poised to go prime time in more ways than one.

Superstar creators Geoff Johns (Green Lantern, Justice Society of America) and George Perez (The Brave and the Bold) team up to present The Legion of Three Worlds, a five-issue, August-launching event mini-series spinning out Final Crisis. And as the title implies, readers get three Legion teams the original squad from Johns' recent run in Action Comics, the "Zero Hour" era version that went into limbo and the Mark Waid-Barry Kitson rebellious teen edition, currently in the hands of writer Jim Shooter for the price of one as presented by two of the biggest, hottest creators working in comics.

"You can equate it to what we did with [Green Lantern: Rebirth], but on a bigger scale," explains Johns. "It's involving Superman, the DCU as a whole and the 31st century. It's the Crisis of the 31st century. There's a story to tell, but the purpose is to reintroduce the concept of the Legion, spend some time there, see what they're all about, and clear up questions people have about them."

The story takes place in the aftermath of Johns' Legion story from Action Comics, as Earth of the 31st century finds itself caught in the grip of xenophobia. The United Planets, a conglomeration of worlds throughout the galaxy, have condemned Earth for its practices the government was exiling and interring aliens in concentration camps'and support for the Legion is at an all-time low.Into this atmosphere of paranoia and mistrust enters long-time Legion villain the Time Trapper, whose diabolical mechanizations in the form of an unexpected surprise villain you'll see on the last page of this exclusive preview are designed to destroy the Legion once and for all.
