DC Nation: We interrupt this week's DC Nation for a very special announcement.

March 25, 2009

We interrupt this week's DC Nation for a very special announcement. Earlier this month I was lucky enough to attend this year's Megacon in the warm and sunny state of Florida, and while this convention was three days filled with excited fans and incredible costumes, the highlight of my weekend, and for many of those in attendance, was an event that took place on Saturday, February 28th.

So while many of you were quietly welcoming in the new month, the people of Orange County, Florida were dedicating that day to one of their own. In recognition for all his accomplishments, both charitable and in the field of comics, the mayor of Orange County, Richard T. Crotty, proclaimed February 28th George Perez Day. And it was our immense pleasure to present to George Orange County's official proclamation at the start our DC Universe panel on March 1st.

Organized by the folks of Heroes Initiative and his lovely wife Carol (they had been planning this for months), this event required that I be sworn to secrecy (and you all know how hard it is for me to keep a secret!) to insure that this would come as a complete surprise to George. Judging by his expression and reaction, I'd say we accomplished our task.

Now this it where it gets personal for me. First of all, George is truly one of the good people, and I can't think of many more worthy of this honor. Secondly, as a longtime fan of comics, George has always been one of my favorites. From White Tiger and "Logan's Run," through "Fantastic Four" and TEEN TITANS, and to JLA/ AVENGERS and FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS, his dynamic art has always amazed and inspired me. As a matter of fact, a page of George's art was the first one I ever bought and the first autograph I ever asked for. And you know what? He was as gracious then as he is now.

In addition to his work on the printed page, George works tirelessly with the Hero Initiative raising money and awareness for former comic creators less fortunate than he.

So while we take a day to celebrate all that he has accomplished, let's remember there is more great work to come.

Congratulations to the man and his day.

To be continued.
