RIP George Perez
To all of George’s fans and friends,
Constance here, with the update no one wants to read. George passed away yesterday, peacefully at home with his wife of 490 months and family by his side. He was not in pain and knew he was very, very loved.
We are all very much grieving but, at the same time, we are so incredibly grateful for the joy he brought to our lives. To know George was to love him; and he loved back. Fiercely and with his whole heart. The world is a lot less vibrant today without him in it.
He loved all of you. He loved hearing your posts and seeing the drawings you sent and the tributes ...

DC Comics
Watch: Comics legend George Perez on DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths
Contributed by Mike Avila
It changed the game? More like it changed the world.
We're referring to Crisis on Infinite Earths,
the legendary comics storyline that completely reworked and rebooted
DC's by-then-beyond-convoluted narrative and continuity. The 12-issue
arc ran from 1985 to 1986 … and things were quite literally never the
same again.
More than 30 years later, Crisis is still spoken of with a sense of awe and wonder … and we got to talk with the guy who drew the damn thing.

DC Comics' Crisis on Infinite Earths: Talking with George Perez | SYFY WIRE

George
Perez cemented his role as one of the greatest comics artists of all
time with the 1985-1986 DC mini-series Crisis on Infinite Earths. Here
he talks about how he got the gig, who he loved drawing and the impact
of Crisis.
More About Crisis on Infinite Earths: "Crisis on Infinite
Earths" is an American comic book crossover storyline published by DC
Comics from 1985 to 1986, consisting of an eponymous 12-issue, limited
series comic book and a number of tie-in books. It was produced by DC
Comics to herald a simplification of its then 50-year-old narrative
continuity. The series was written by Marv Wolfman and illustrated by
George Pérez (pencils and layouts), Mike DeCarlo, Dick Giordano and
Jerry Ordway (inking and embellishing). The series removed the
multiverse concept from the fictional DC Universe, depicting the death
of long-standing characters Supergirl and the Barry Allen incarnation of
the Flash. Continuity in the DC Universe is divided into pre-Crisis and
post-Crisis periods. Crisis is considered by many to be one of the most
important and most influential comic book storylines of all time.

As a sign of how old I am, my first comic book that I purchased with my own money was Crisis on Infinite Earths for $0.75, 30 years ago. I bought it from Yunkee, because I was drawn to the many characters in the books. I believe the Crisis #3
was on newsstand at that time period, so I was actually missing issue
#2 for a while (but obviously I've tracked down the missing issue at a
comic book store - Sierra Comics and Books in Clovis, California). I
have very fond memories of the series, read #5 in the bathtub (to this
day, the comic has water damage), blown away by the death of Supergirl,
followed by the death of Flash (Barry Allen). Wow, this was amazing
comic-changing stuff! There was no internet, there was no Previews;
the only way to find out what was happening was to visit a newsstand
(because the comic book store was usually too far for me).
Having said all that, and excuse me if you think I do not understand the
digital age (because I will agree with you), but selling a digital
collection of Crisis for $19.99 is way, way too much.
The digital collection came out this week, February 3rd, 2015,
previously you had to purchase each issue individually, priced at $1.99
each. In both cases, you're going to spend around $20 to $24 to get the
entire story... which I think is just too much.
I understand the real cost is the content, but I will argue with you
that after 30 years, believe me when I tell you that DC Comics have
already made their money on these comics, whether it is through various
printings or different formats or licensing it to foreign countries.
I've personally contributed over $200 to DC, just in the Crisis line...
I know that kids these days probably have more money than when I was a
young - but the entry way for me into comics were the fact that it was
inexpensive. Comics were still under $1 for most newsprints and it was
affordable for me. Current pricing for most new books ($2.99 or $3.99),
I think is just too much money. While there is really no way to
reduce the cost of the flimsies, due to the rising cost of paper and
ink, I believe they should focus to digital. Make digital the entry
point by reducing the price to 99 cents or lower. From my personal
experience, the flimsies were usually an entry point for me - if I enjoy
a series, I'll end up buying more books from the same creators or
getting the deluxe hardcover down the road.
Look, I'm not negative on all things digital, here are some companies that are doing it right:
All new Marvel Comics comes with digital codes.
Buying CDs/Vinyls from Amazon will also grant you digital version.*
Buying new Bluray, I usually prefer to get the "Ultraviolet" version.
At the end of the day, my point is that I just don't see the value of
paying $20 for bits and bytes, especially when you get none of the
benefits of print (lending, re-selling, showing it off...) The
tradeoff is, of course, is convenience, portability, and updateable (for
example, they raised the resolution on old Comixology comics and
updated typos or initial errors). Since there's virtually no cost to
digital, I believe this is the perfect opportunity is to get fans into
comics by making that affordable (especially for really old titles)...
and they'll be hooked in and will buy more of your books in the long
run.
* Limited to certain record labels. And oddly enough, when Amazon
bought the popular digital comics retailer, Comixology, they made it
worst by removing in-app purchasing from iTunes. They basically lost a
bunch of digital comic fans overnight.

CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS: ABSOLUTE EDITION (Nov 2005)
DC Comics
|
(excerpt)
Now, somewhere around
fifteen years after I read it the first time, I’ve absorbed a lot more
information about the pre-Crisis DC multiverse. I’ve seen many of the
changes wrought by Crisis undone – there’s a Supergirl in DC continuity
again, and there have been at least two attempts to restore a
multiverse/parallel world structure, including last year’s sequel
Infinite Crisis. So I took another look at Crisis, this time in DC’s
oversized Absolute format. (There’s also a standard-sized softcover
edition of the story itself.) And the book looks great. Perez’s art
really shines in the oversized format, where all his detail can shine.
The paper quality is great, and Tom McCraw did a fantastic job
recreating the old color separations to give the book a look that’s
appropriate to the era, but not hamstrung by technology – most of the
colors are pretty flat, but they’re deep and printed with a high
resolution.

Crisis on Infinite Earths: The Absolute Edition Review
The best $100 you may ever spend on comics.
by Hilary Goldstein
January 6, 2006 - Forget "The Dark
Knight" or "Man of Steel," the most powerful word to any DC fan is
"Crisis." That is solely thanks to the incredible 1985 year-long
maxiseries by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. Crisis on Infinite Earths
wasn't the first Crisis in the DCU, but it became the single defining
event in the long history of the publishing giant. Crisis took 50 years
of continuity, nearly a half-dozen different universes and hundreds of
characters, squeezed them all together and came out with one shiny new
playground that has existed for the past two decades.
Crisis on Infinite Earths is a crucial
turning point for DC Comics. Originally a celebration of the 50th
anniversary of the company, it became a savior. Since the late '60s,
the industry had become dominated by Marvel Comics. DC was getting it's
ass kicked week after week by the early '80s it seemed inevitable that
the company would slowly waste away, bit by bit, for the next decade.
Instead, Marv Wolfman had the bold idea to cleanse the burdens of 50
years of continuity, with an event unlike any seen before.
The Absolute Edition contains the entire
maxi-series, all twelve issues, along with an insightful 96-page
compendium. While you'll get the notable Crisis tale, you won't get any
of the lead-up or fallout. The Crisis didn't just start with issue #1.
As with DC's new Infinite Crisis event, the seeds were planted long in
advance. One of the key figures in Infinite Earths, the Monitor, began
showing up in DC books a couple of years before the maxi-series. And
once the Crisis ended, DC spent the next several years slowly
reintroducing and revamping it's characters. It was a long, arduous
process that, along with several other key titles, helped put DC back
on the map.

WOLFMAN'S ABSOLUTE CRISIS
posted 01-06-2006 01:55 PM
BY JENNIFER M. CONTINO
Twenty years later, people
are still talking about DC's original earths-shattering event, The
Crisis on Infinite Earths, one of the comic book shots heard 'round the
world. He even rewrote the entire history of the DCU. In November, DC
Comics released a special Absolute Crisis hardcover edition. The
collection included all twelve issues in one volume and a second volume
presenting special behind-the-scenes features from both Marv Wolfman
and George Perez.
(excerpt)
Wolfman said he thinks the word "Crisis"
is used a lot because it's come to mean something on a grand scale.
However, it wasn't his idea to call the saga "Crisis on Infinite
Earths. He said, "George - who suggested the title - based it on the
original DC crossovers in the Justice League of America: Crisis on
Earth One. Crisis on Earth Two, etc. If it's still being used it's
because they, and we, made such an impact that the word itself now is
synonymous with epic and grandeur. If our book helped foster that
usage, I can be very proud that our work inspired both readers and the
endless parade of creators that followed us. A crisis doesn't have to
be a major event as George and I did. It can be a Crisis of the soul,
to use an used name for a Crisis spinoff. It should be a real,
emotional story about characters making major decisions that affects
others."

New Year’s Revolutions: 2006 is the new 2005
Sunday, January 1
By David Wallace
Well, not really, but you
know what I mean. After a big year for comics in 2005 saw the Big Two
shake things up considerably, there are quite a few things I’m looking
forward to in 2006 as a result…
(excerpt)
5. Best way to show your comics some love! DC Absolute editions:
DC could potentially tempt more and more monthly readers to switch
sides in the “wait for the trade” debate with the unveiling of the
first of its Absolute editions in 2005. These exemplary volumes
used an oversized, slipcased hardcover format and high quality paper
stock and printing methods to present comics in the best manner I’ve
ever seen. Taking a cue from some of the great hardcover collections
that Marvel comics have recently turned out, DC has also included pages
and pages of extras in these sets (artwork, interviews, commentaries,
pencils and variant covers) which really add value to the books and
offer tons of insight into the modern classics which have so far been
released in the format.
Batman: Hush and Watchmen were the first two stories to receive the prestigious “Absolute” treatment, with Crisis on Infinite Earths
following soon after in a satisfyingly weighty set. It really enhances
the pleasure of reading to have comics presented in such a definitive
format, and despite their high price tag these are really worthy
additions to any DC fan’s collection. I look forward to seeing what
comics receive the same treatment in 2006.

There were a few disputed credits to
choose from this year. With credits from the Absolute Crisis Index
being dropped, Steve Gerber and Mary Skrenes claiming ownership of
Omega The Unknown (which Marvel then went on to publish a new series
of, and a trade of the original work without addressing those
concerns), or even Joss Whedon being repeatedly announced as attending
Dragon Con when he'd never been asked, so many names weren't being put

NOVEMBER 2005 SALES CHARTS & MARKET SHARE REPORT
12-16-2005 03:40 PM
(excerpt)
UPDATE 12/17/05: This month,
again thanks to our partnership with Comics Buyer’s Guide, Newsarama is
now able to bring readers estimates of the number of comics, graphic
novels, and now overall market sales sold to the direct market. Click
on the following link for the Top 300 Comics, Top 100 Graphic Novels
and Overall Market Estimates.
According to the analysis of CBG’s John
Jackson Miller, Infinite Crisis, All-Star Superman, and a great month
for new trade paperback sales (led by over 10k orders for The OMAC
Project helped the direct market to double-digit gains in November.
Stable year-over-year sales for comics were complemented by a $4.74
million month for Diamond’s Top 100 trade paperbacks, a 23% increase
over the same month in 2004.
”The market continues on pace for a
$350 million year in the direct market”, Miller said. “CBG had earlier
projected a range between $340 and $350 million, but the market now
looks as if it’ll wind up nearer the higher end of that range.”
“As of this past Wednesday, December 14,
we have passed the overall dollar sales mark in the direct market set
in 2005. From here on out it’s all growth. It’s gravy from here on
out.”

DCD (Diamond Comics Distributors)
released their monthly Direct Market sale charts and Market Share

2005, and while DC Comics had the two best selling titles of the month,
Infinite Crisis #2 (#1) and All-Star Superman #1 (#2), along with the top-selling trade paperback of the month, The OMAC Project,
Marvel Comics strength in the overall Top 20 Comics (14 of 20) helped
them first in both Dollar and Unit Market Share for the month.
House of M wrapped up with its final issue #8 in 3rd place for the month, and X-Men: Deadly Genesis
made a very strong debut at #6. The rest of the Top 100 took on its
fairly usual flavor, with just six of the Top 100 coming from outside

TODAY'S VIEWS
DEC 11, 2005
(excerpt)
The thing that makes it even more
special, however, is the 96 page extra book they've included (the cover
to that volume is printed to the left). I'm assuming it was Bob
Greenberger, my old assistant on the original Crisis and the editor of
this version, but he must have kept all the original memos, plots,
ideas, etc. that we worked up over a period of several years in the
formation of the book. Stuff I had completely forgotten, but it's all
here, including the fabled "Can We Kill Supergirl?" memo that then
Editor-In-Chief Dick Giordano sent to then publisher Jenette Kahn. I am
absolutely thrilled by the book. It's not cheap, essentially $100.00.
But it's one of those things I never ever expected to see on any of my
books. The extra volume, the size of the entire project and the
printing and layout make that steep cost worth while.

Do you know why the "Monitor Tapes" in the Absolute version of CRISIS ON
INFINITE EARTHS is the same inked version that was in the 1998 printing of
the collection?
DC advertised it as:
(Please note that the Monitor Tapes section from issue #10
will be shot from the original art for this issue and represented
in its original form.)
I thought the original was screened from George's pencils. DC didn't spend
the money to get the pencils printed directly. Then when they did the 1998
collection they had Al Vey ink over photocopies of the original. That the
original art wasn't available when they did the collection.

CRISIS ON INFINITE INDEXES
What is it with collected volumes of Crisis? Are they cursed?
The "Absolute Crisis" volume has a "Crisis Compendium" to guide you through this landmark DC project.
The content includes a reprint of the
"Crisis Of Infinite Earths Index" from 1986. They originally credited
editor Murray Ward, and writers Lou Mougin, Mark Waid, with assistance
credits to Chuck Huber, Mike Tiefenbacher, Andy Mangels and Andrew
McLaney.
Their level of contribution seems to
differ, but the Crisis Compendium has removed the assistance credit. I
understand the individuals concerned will not receive any payment or
sample copies of "Absolute Crisis." It seems DC's contract is with
Murray Ward, Lou Mougin and Mark Waid, who have not stated anyone else
was involved in the project, nor requested that anyone else be
credited, comped or paid.
It's not the only issue... a few George
Perez websites point out that on page 35, the "Crisis Compendium"
identifies a photo as being of "Jerry Ordway and George Pérez with an
unidentified friend at the 1986 Kirby Awards."
The "unidentified friend" is Carol Flynn. George Perez' wife.
The Compendium photo
The George Perez Magazine photo
I wonder if DC will reprint the slipcase collection, as they did the "Crisis" Hardcover those years ago? Probably not...
One other irony is that when the Index
was initially published, the indicia fell off during printing and so a
book containing "appearances" by virtually every DC character extant
came out with no copyright notice… though DC were very understanding at
the time.
From Marcus Mebes
How horrifyingly sad. On page 35 of the Crisis Compendium, a photo is
labeled "Jerry Ordway and George Pérez with an unidentified friend at
the 1986 Kirby Awards."
That's CAROL FLYNN!!! Not just some "unidentified friend"

"Crisis" would wipe out all those
alternate realities and simplify the DC Universe down to one manageable
version of Earth. In the process, dozens of heroes would die, and we're
not talking just the second-tier characters. Big-time heroes like
Supergirl and the Flash both fell prey to the "Crisis."
The new Absolute Edition commemorates
the 20th anniversary of the original maxi-series. This pricey edition
features the full 12-issue series, introduction by the series' author,
Marv Wolfman, and bios for all the creators involved. Legendary artist
George Perez provides new art for the dust jacket of the 368-page Book
One. Book Two is a 96-page companion text featuring DVD-style extras
like behind-the-scenes material and commentary, plus another new cover
by Perez.
At $99.99, this hefty hardcover is
probably not for the casual comics fan, but the hard-core geek on your
Christmas list would most likely be delighted to find one under the

the drill by now. I'm looking at some of the trade paperbacks and
hardcovers being released in September. There's a lot more stuff

pre-ordering is your friend, and that you can share your picks for the
month at the Pipeline message board.

DC: We start with the pricey CRISIS ON
INFINITE EARTHS: THE ABSOLUTE EDITION. This one chimes in at a hefty
464 pages, but will set you back $100. I'm still smarting from the last
limited edition hardcover release that turned out to be a
not-so-limited edition. Plus, it's just not my thing. You have to
really love a lot of old-time DC characters to get into this one.
Perez's art is impressive, but it's not enough to keep my attention for
12 issues of universe crunching tedium. The format is nice, though.
...
The third collection of George Perez's
WONDER WOMAN run is titled BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. It's another $20 from
your bank account. DC is kind enough to make sure the first two volumes
are also still available.

Worlds lived. Worlds died. And the DC Universe was never the same! In
1985, DC Comics dramatically altered comics' original universe with
CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, a 12-issue series that rocked the comics
community, tragically dooming some of DC's most beloved characters and
drastically altering others. Written by Marv Wolfman and pencilled by
George Pérez, with inks by Dick Giordano, Jerry Ordway and Mike
DeCarlo, CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS finds the alternate worlds that once
were a hallmark of the DC Universe under siege by a mysterious force
powerful enough to wipe out the lives of billions.
Now this landmark series gets the star
treatment in CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS: THE ABSOLUTE EDITION - an
oversized slipcased set containing two hardcover books. The 368-page
Book One includes the full 12-issue maxiseries (which was painstakingly
restored and meticulously recolored in 1998), with an introduction by
Marv Wolfman, afterword by Dick Giordano, and creator bios. George
Pérez provides all-new art for the dustjacket. (Please note that the
Monitor Tapes section from issue #10 will be shot from the original art
for this issue and represented in its original form.)
The 96-page Book Two contains a
compendium featuring the full behind-the-scenes story on the years-long
making of the maxiseries complete with memos, notes, original plots and
commentary from Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway; the Official Index to
Crisis and Official Index to Crisis Crossovers being reprinted for the
very first time, completely updated; a look into post-Crisis events and
aftermath stories, how the Superboy/Legion conundrum was solved, and a
