SDCC: Legion of Superheroes Panel The past, present and future of one of DC's most beloved superteams...At a convention known for its fans' devotion and passion, Legion of Superheroes devotees are truly in a league of their own. Throughout Saturday's "Legion of Superheroes Panel," fans from across the globe shared their personal connections to the DC superteam with panelists, Paul Levitz, Mike Grell, Keith Giffen, Colleen Doran, Geoff Johns, Tom Bierbaum, and Mary Bierbaum, as well as questions about the varying specifics of a series that has one of the broadest mythos of any in the comic universe. Being such a beloved series, its no surprise that many in attendance were extremely concerned about the future of the series. Johns let out a minor spoiler, revealing part of Una's character arc: "You turn the page and she's multiplied into like a hundred of her and she says 'I don't know how I ever got anything done with just three of me,'" he added. "She's going to be called 'Duplicate Damsel'." Continuing, Legion of Three Worlds writer Johns certainly tried to ease any fears that his run would be lacking anyone's favorite character, asserting that George Perez, "wants to draw every Legionnaire ever." Unfortunately, the Superpets will not be making an appearance. It may be a year later, but it looks like Johns is up to his surprise-pulling tricks again.
This year, Johns will join with artist George Perez to tell another epic story about a team of ring-wearing heroes in Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds, the oversized five-issue mini-series that begins in August.
While we talked to Johns in detail (both here and here) about the characters he's re-introducing in Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds, we're checking back again as the release date draws near and Final Crisis is underway (just as we did Monday with the other Final Crisis mini-series set for August, Final Crisis: Revelations.
And this time, Johns spilled about how this series will reverberate into the coming year, confirming that not only will questions be answered about the Legion, their lightning rod and that rascal Superboy-Prime, but readers of Green Lantern might also want to take note.
Newsarama: First, Geoff, let's talk about the scope of Legion of 3 Worlds. We talked a lot in the past about the Legion characters, but will this comic play into other things going on the in the DC Universe?
Geoff Johns: Legion of 3 Worlds, while an epic on its own, sets up a lot of things for 2009 in the DCU. It’s grown out of my work on Action Comics, Justice Society of America, Green Lantern, The Flash, Teen Titans and Infinite Crisis. It’s strange, looking at it in the big picture. It’s a culmination in a sense for me and leads me to the next level and the next books.

This August Legion of Super-Hero fans are going to have the best of both worlds -- or maybe three worlds! Superstars Geoff Johns and George Perez team to present Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds, a five-part tale that rocks the 31st century to it's core as the Legion of Super-Heroes are pit against their longtime adversary Time Trapper, and his ultimate weapon, Superboy-Prime. Perez is known for his painstakingly detailed artwork that made him a comics household name when he was drawing the New Teen Titans. Perez told THE PULSE he's wanted to work on the Legion of Super-Heroes for years, and is glad to finally have this opportunity.
Prior to this newest crisis threatening the cosmos, Perez teamed with Geoff Johns for a portion of 2005's Infinite Crisis. But his most famous crisis work -- up to this point in time, of course, has to be 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths. Prior to this point, although a big fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes, Perez had only covered one of DC's oldest superteams a few times in the '80s, and featured them as guest stars here and there. He never worked on the ongoing series or a miniseries specifically about this team. However, the artist is no stranger to having to illustrate a multitude of characters in the confines of any given story. With his last assignment, The Brave and the Bold, Perez drew dozens of heroes and villains each issue. What sets Perez apart from the pack, though, is that each of his characters looks distinctive and unique -- not just like talking heads with different colored hair or masks.
