New York, NY —
Warner Books (the publisher of David Baldacci and Nelson DeMille) and DC
Comics (the largest English-language publisher of comics in the world
and home to such iconic characters as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman)
announced today that novelist Brad Meltzer has become the first author
to top The New York Times Bestseller List and the Diamond Comic
Distributors Top 100 Sales Chart simultaneously. Meltzer's new thriller
THE BOOK OF FATE—which debuts atop the New York Times list on September
24—features a decade-old presidential crossword puzzle, a disturbing
secret buried in Masonic history and a 200-year-old secret code invented
by Thomas Jefferson. Issue number One of Meltzer's JUSTICE LEAGUE OF
AMERICA, which tells the story of the re-formation of the world's
greatest superhero team, anchored by Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman,
is the overall top comic book in both dollars and units the Diamond
Comic Distributors Top 300 Sales Chart for the month of October.
"There's one name on the cover of every
book, but only a fool thinks it's a one-person show," said Meltzer.
"Warner built this. DC Comics built this. And most important, they built
it together."
The book quickly establishes the intense friendship developed by
Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman through a series of vignettes drawn by
legends in the sequential art industry.
Names such as George Perez, Dick
Giordano, Dan Jurgens, Howard Porter and Jim Lee each leave their style
upon a few of the 24 pages that chronicle significant incidents that
have shaped the league through the years.
From an initial meeting in the
Batcave by the three to the wedding of Donna Troy to the apparent death
of Superman to the Seven Soldiers struggle, Mr. Meltzer covers a ton of
real estate but delivers helpful context and a seamless entry point for
his era of the JLA.
THE WEDDING OF DONNA TROY (p. 7)
Art by George Perez
MELTZER: For me, this is the true royal wedding in the DCU. No supervillains attacking, no Skrulls, just a wedding.
PEREZ: When I got the assignment, I had
assumed I'd be drawing the JLA. I was quite surprised to find that I was
recreating the wedding of Donna Troy and Terry Long. I found out later
that Brad had created the scene especially so I could draw it-and so he
could purchase the original art. [Laughs] I think I did it better this
time. Since my wife Carol designed the dresses for the bridal party, it
was nice to draw them again.
MELTZER: Working with George brought
tears to my eyes. His Justice League of America, Avengers and New Teen
Titans are the reason I'm a comic reader.
PEREZ: Inking myself allowed me to get a
little more detail into everything. I drew Bruce Wayne a little
differently from two decades ago, since at the time I hadn't yet nailed
down a definitive face for the character and the inkers, Dick Giordano
and Mike DeCarlo, working from my layouts had more liberty.
Though the series kicked off last month in the special issue #0, Brad Meltzer’s Justice League of America
kicks off in earnest next week with the release of issue #1, and fans
will begin to find out what they’ve been wanting to know for months –
who's on the roster?
As we promised last month, Meltzer is coming back to Newsarama again to
answer your questions about issue #0, issue #1, or the series in
general, but we’re shaking things up and doing things a little
differently this time around.
Celebrating some of this years biggest landmarks with creator and
celebrity signatures! For the first time ever DF is bringing the
signature of Allan Heinberg (of Sex and the City, The O.C. and Grey's
Anatomy) signing a limited number of Wonder Woman #1's for this
appearance WITH the signatures of artist extra-ordinaire Terry and
Rachel Dodson to complete this package - all just in time for Wonder
Woman's 65th Anniversary! - appearing on the show! And out of a
"crisis", something always happens to a Flash! To commemorate the new
Flash #1, DF is bringing it signed by artist Ken Lashley, and just in
time for the Silver Age of the Scarlet Speedster's 50th Anniversary! And
if that were not enough, DF is bringing in the "all-star" signatures of
Michael Turner on the hot debut issue of Justice League of America #0,
PLUS great signatures by classic artists Nick Cardy and Mike DeCarlo,
with signatures from George Perez, Tom Smith, Alex Ross with Jim
Kruegar, Justin Gray and others from DC's brave new world and their
distinguished history!
Robert Murray: 3½ Bullets
The artwork in the issue is just as capable as the writing, which is
surprising considering the number of hands in the same pot. Twenty-three
different artists had a hand in the rendering of the panels, but
instead of feeling like a jam session of artistic talent, Meltzer
employs the different styles and techniques to assist in the
storytelling, creating feelings of nostalgia as well as excitement for
future incarnations of the League. Selfishly, I loved the pages by Dick
Giordano and George Perez, as it recreated the comics I read as a kid.
In my opinion, the most effective pages were done by Eric Wight (loved
the classic feel) and Kevin Maguire (you can’t help loving the faces he
draws). Yes, some of the art was lackluster, but all of the pieces fit,
creating a look that backs up the jumps in time. The most disheartening
aspect of the art, and the entire issue in general, was what was
provided by Ed Benes and Sandra Hope, who will be the series “regular”
art team. Benes’ rendering of faces doesn’t really do it for me, as they
don’t really express the emotions of particular characters. In a couple
of panels, Superman almost looks stoned! As for Hope, her inking lines
are way too much, cutting into each and every muscle and facial feature.
It actually distracted me during the conclusion of the issue, which is
something an inker should never do.
July 19th saw the release of Justice League of America #0 and Back Issue #17, which includes a previously unseen Starfire/Wonder Girl sketch by George (along with several other Perez illos).
