Dale Crain (DC Archive Editor) tells me that the cover to THE NEW TEEN TITANS ARCHIVES #2 was re-inked by Bob Wiacek.

See original scan of the cover by George Pérez and Romeo Tanghal. Scan courtesy of Bill Walko.

(Vu: Art CLEARLY reads PEREZ & TANGHAL, I do not know why DC Comics credited the NEW TEEN TITANS ARCHIVES #2 cover as George Pérez and Bob Wiacek. Can anyone contact the archive department for verification? Did Wiacek re-inked the new cover or maybe this is a serious error?)

    DC Comics

Just thought that I'd drop you a line and let you know that I enjoyed your review of The New Teen Titans Archive # 2. Regarding the cover, it originally appeared as the back cover to Best of DC #18, except the characters on the right were on the left, and vice versa, with Titans Tower in between. I'm sure that somewhere out there there's a scan of it. I have to admit, at first the Archive cover looked a little weird to me having seen the original composition, but I like it, too.

     May 24, 2004 12:03 am | TT Archives #2 Review
    From Vu

I must say that these Archive Editions are really nice books.

The bright white sturdy pages really shows off the brilliant colors by Adrienne Roy, who I suspect the color reconstruction of Jamison had a lot to do with it as well. The paper is so much nicer than the normal "newsprint" paper that DC uses on their Trade Paperbacks, such as WONDER WOMAN: GODS AND MORTALS TP #1 (Feb 2004) or THE NEW TEEN TITANS: THE TERROR OF TRIGON TP (Jun 2003), but it does come at a much higher cost: $49.95, which includes 240 pages and a hardcover.

If you look at a newsprint Trade compared to Marvel's trade, which consists of a glossy paper stock, you'll notice that the DC Trades are far more inferior, especially when you factor in the price.

Anyway, the Archive printing is crisp and readable and, apparently, the book was published in Hong Kong. Previously all of DC's books were printed in Canada. I guess it's cheaper to print in HK and have it shipped to the US.

The book contain a new foreword written by Marv Wolfman, which recounts all of the collected issues (#9-16) with some fun facts and anecdotes. The cover, which I haven't seen before, was penciled by George Pérez and inked by Bob Wiacek.

I did notice a small error, the content lists "A REUNION" when the title is actually "REUNION!". Also, the George Perez/Romeo Tanghal cover to BEST OF DC #18 (Nov 1981) did not get reprinted (all of the other issues had the cover reprinted in the book).

Another slight oversight was that Len Wein was not credited in the contents table. However, a short biography was written for him on the last page of the book, along with the other creators.

Anyway, this will make a fine addition to any book collection. The benefit in having such a nice book is that you no longer have to go and open up the original "pamplets" and risk damaging the comic (I've had many experiences with the tape-stick-to-cover incidents).

From TEEN TITANS ARCHIVES #2 (May 2004)

    FOREWORD
    written by Marv Wolfman
published in TEEN TITANS ARCHIVES #2 (May 2004)
    transcribed by Vu

Books change as they grow. Or at least they should. As time goes on, the writer and artist begin to feel more confident with what they're doing. If they're lucky they know they've got something that works so they don't mind taking chances. Most important, they know they've laid the proper groundwork so if one experiment fails, it won't spell instant disaster for the book

    That's TITANS #9-16 in a nutshell.

Back in 1981, sales of THE NEW TEEN TITANS started high, dropped with issue #2 and 3, then began to zoom higher and higher starting with issue #6. The readers were with us. They saw something special, something different was happening. And, most important, the Titans were attracting readers who hadn't bought a DC comics in years. We could have been content just writing and drawing the same stories month in and month out, but we weren't. The ever-amazing George Perez and I both would get bored pretty quickly, and, trust me, the readers, sensing that, would not be far behind.

We knew this was the time for us to push the envelope. TITANS would hit its stride in what will be our third Archive volume, but all the groundwork was laid in issue #1-8 and confidently pushed along in issue #9-16, the stories that are represented here.

The TRIGON collection is a trade and the next Perez Titans material you see is will be the second volume of the Archives, probably in 2004. Yes, we'll be recoloring his JLA and Wonder Woman books when we get to them. No, George won't be doing new covers, as mentioned earlier.

This may be a one of those smaller Archives like Challengers. I e-mailed Marv Wolfman and asked him what the contents of #2 would be. I specifically wanted to know if the 10 page DC Digest story would be included. He replied that he did know but couldn't remember, but that the Archive might cover the next 5 to 6 issues. Wouldn't that make it alot less than 200 pages?

Thanks, Mike. I'd love to see DC print all George's an my Titans, and with a second Archives edition coming out soon, as well as the Titans Baxter reprinting, they are on the way to doing just that. I'd also love for them to finally finish and print the Titans graphic novel George and I started so many years ago. He completed about 80 pages of incredible art and we can always get someone else to finish it up and then have me write it as planned.

    Marv,
DC just announced that The New Teen Titans Volume 2(1984) issues 1-5 will be collected into a Trade Parerback. Did you write a intro for the new TPB? I always like the introductions that provide a little behind the scenes info on the project. Just wondering.

posted 12-04-02 04:31 by Marv Wolfman

No, I was not asked to write an intro to the Trigon storyline. On the other hand, I did write the intro to the second Titans Archives edition. It is possible they asked George, which would make sense as it was, in many ways, his swan song on the Titans. He did do approximately 80 pages of a 120 page Titans graphic novel - that I think is still the best Titans work he ever did - but that has never seen print and to date there seems to be no interest in having me finish writing it and him - or someone else - finish drawing it. Even with another artist it would still be 80 pages of Perez/Wolfman Titans.

As for the Trigon collection - I don't know too much about it. But I, too, hope it's printed as least as well as the original which was beautiful.
