According to Fernando Blanco, he was brought in at the last minute to draw Flashpoint: Secret Seven because Perez could not finish his pages in time. FLASHPOINT: SECRET SEVEN #1 (Jun 2011) only featured 15 pages from Perez and Blanco was brought in to finish pages 16-20.  Also FLASHPOINT: SECRET SEVEN #2 (Jul 2011), although originally listed Perez as interior artist, featured Fernando Blanco as the entire interior artist. Below are some unpublished layouts.

Illustrating that news you can see some Marvel Zombies Supreme pencils with one of the scenes that I was happier and some Secret Seven unpublished layouts, because at the end, George Pérez was able to complete his pages in time.

Robot 6: What Are You Reading?

Welcome to another edition of What Are You Reading? This week our special guest is Robert Stanley Martin.

Secret Seven I am less enthused about, which is too bad, because I am a fan of both Peter Milligan and George Perez. To put it bluntly, I don’t think Perez is entirely right for this material — which, again, is too bad, because if he had channeled some of the old post-psychedelia ’70s mojo, he could really have done something special with it. The story doesn’t help much, though: Rac Shade, disgraced leader of “the Seven,” gets called home to an alternate dimension where he’s alternately tortured and debriefed. This is where all the psychedelia comes in (or, more accurately, could have been amplified.) Meanwhile, June Moone, the Enchantress, is out in the real world looking for him. Fernando Blanco takes over the art for the book’s last few pages, and inker Scott Koblish ties together his work with Perez’s to make everything flow together, but it’s a lot of setup without much payoff. I’ll probably end up getting the whole thing, and I think there’s some potential here; but it doesn’t thrill me like I thought it would.

FLASHPOINT FRIDAY: “I’m A Changing Man”
Friday, May 27th, 2011 by David Hyde

FLASHPOINT: SECRET SEVEN #1 comes to us from a distinguished creative team indeed. Peter Milligan is the writer of many acclaimed titles, notably SHADE THE CHANGING MAN, the cult classic published by Vertigo in the ‘90s. From CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS to INFINITE CRISIS, artist George Perez is no stranger to major events. Joining them on the project are artist Scott Koblish, who has worked on various DC titles for decades, including SUPERMAN, FINAL CRISIS, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA, and WONDER WOMAN, and Fernando Blanco, the artist of FALLEN ANGEL.

When it comes to a series written by Milligan starring Shade the Changing Man, the “leader” of the Secret Seven, one might expect a level of otherworldly weirdness. The first four pages certainly pave the way for a surreal journey to come….
