Wonder Woman 600- Wednesday, June 30, 2010 posted by Scott Koblish @ 7:56 PM
Lots
of stuff going on. Before I forget, I inked George Perez's contribution
to Wonder Woman 600! A milestone in my professional life, as I was a
big fan of George's take on Princess Diana. Lots of fun! Pick up a copy
today!
Unexpectedly, there is a strange history of Wonder Woman’s publication that emerges with the magnificent, fully formed Wonder Woman #600.
Not a chronology mind you, a genealogy of the character in print. The
landmark issue runs its course over five short stories, the final of
which being prologue to the new creative direction taken by series
regular, J. Michael Straczynski. These stories are themselves
interspersed with posters drawn by an array of artists, specifically
commissioned for this anniversary issue. And the entire issue is
introduced by a brief essay written by Lynda Carter, the actor who
played the character in the groundbreaking TV show.
But between the short stories and the posters a clear story
emerges—the history of Wonder Woman’s treatment at the hands of her
creatives. For openers, Gail Simone pens a George Perez-illustrated
short called ‘Valedictorian’. Perez is a veteran artist with a
longstanding connection to the character. Another DC veteran is Louise
Simonson, who later in the book, in ‘Firepower’, unfolds a tale of
civil disaster (planes being forced to crash) at the hands of mythical
horse-thief. Closing off the book is incoming series regular writer J
Michael Straczynski’s ‘Couture Shock’, with artist Don Kramer
showcasing Jim Lee’s redesign of the Wonder Woman costume.
Confessions of a Comic Book Guy--The Power of Pants Column by Steve Bennett Published: 07/08/2010 12:00am
Confessions
of a Comic Book Guy is a weekly column by Steve Bennett of Super-Fly
Comics and Games in Yellow Springs, Ohio. This week, Bennett looks at
the new Wonder Woman.
First a correction then an apology;
in last week's column I called "The Iron Curtain Caper," a 13 page
story featuring Archie Andrews foreign correspondent cousin Andrew a
well done "imitation" of a 50's Archie
story. I knew the publisher claimed it was recently found in their
archives but I assumed (like when Marvel insisted The Sentry was a
"lost" character) this was so much ballyhoo. But Rik Offenberger,
Public Relations Coordinator for Archie Comics emailed to inform me
that to the best of their knowledge the story really was drawn in the
1950's. I apologize to him, Archie Comics and you for spreading
incorrect information; once more I have proven to be too smart for my
own good.

“George Perez would like to draw a story for Wonder Woman #600, and he wants you to write it.”
What?
George Perez what?
He wants WHO to write it?
I’ve had some amazing experiences as a writer in the time I’ve been
at DC Comics, but every comic writer will tell you there’re few things
as thrilling as working with an artist you’ve adored for years. Every
assignment is special and important, but writing JLA for Jose Garcia
Lopez, writing Superman for John Byrne, or writing a Black Canary story
for Michael Golden, well, those are moments a writer lives for.
But this is Wonder Woman, and this is George Perez.
Every Monday afternoon at 2pm, PREVIEWS provides a list of new products arriving in comic shops for the following week!
PLEASE NOTE: The
products on the lists below are expected to ship to comic shops on the
indicated date. This list, however, is tentative and subject to change.
Please check with your retailer for availability, as not all new
releases may be on sale in all areas the same week. Items marked as (MR) or (A) listings are viewed using the below .PDF and .TXT links.
It's now clear that George Perez, not only provided the regular cover,
but also does interior artwork. This also mean that Adam Hughes variant
and B&W variant needs to be included in the Wonder Woman checklist.
"Chase" and "Variant" covers are the big prizes for die-hard comic
collectors. These rare editions initiate the ultimate treasure hunt as
they are very limited in quantity — which makes them all the more
desirable for completists. To assist collectors in obtaining these
ever-elusive comics, PREVIEWSworld offers this updated checklist of Chase and Incentive Variants, and when they are expected to arrive in your local comic shops. NOTE:
Availability of these comics is extremely limited, so please check with
your retailer for pricing and details. To find your local store, check
out theComic Shop Locator Service!

The response to our call for Wonder Woman postcards was spectacular,
and we got the message loud and clear. We asked for 600 and by the Oct
31st cut off, we had an overwhelming 712 postcards (nearly 800 by the
time of this writing), so as a man of my word, starting in June 2010,
DC’s Wonder Woman series will celebrate its 600th issue and continue on
from there. And we promise that Diana’s anniversary issue will be one
to remember! There are some big plans in place and big changes in store
for our favorite amazon warrior, so keep an eye on The Source in the new year, because we will be breaking the news here first!
To be continued….

But that’s not all. We’ll be announcing some major news in
relation to Wonder Woman early in 2010, including the roster of
all-star artists contributing to the 600th issue. Until then, though,
we’ll leave you with the issue’s cover, by none other than George
Perez, who’s nostrangerto the Amazon Princess.
And stay tuned to The Source this week, as we continue to roll out our major plans for the coming year.
