Fans of George Perez–-and I’m definitely one of them–-will be bowled over by Pacesetter #1 ($6.50), which, in its previous life, was The George Perez Newsletter. Editor/publisher Tony Lorenz has put together a handsome square-bound zine whose 64 pages are filled with commentary on Perez’s work and an abundance of drawings by the artist. This issue focuses on George’s work for smaller comic-book publishers with an emphasis on the art he produced for Ultraforce and other Ultraverse titles. Among the contents: an interview with Ultraverse co-founder Gerard Jones, articles from artists who have been helped/inspired by Perez, a checklist of Perez’s Malibu work, and a 26-page Perez gallery. The theme for the second issue will be Perez’s current efforts for CrossGen.

Pacesetter is a cheerful tribute to Perez and mirrors George’s own affable nature. I give it four Tonys. For ordering information, email Tony Lorenz.

(Vu: Just a note that the PACESETTER #1 cover takes up about 15% of a page in Isabella's review, which basically means that the cover was very noticable to anyone flipping through the newspaper.)

PACESETTER: THE GEORGE PEREZ MAGAZINE #1
    $6.50, b/w 64 pgs, available now
    reviewed by Jack Abramowitz

Pacesetter is The George Pérez Newsletter under a new name. While the editorial explains that GPN was more than just a newsletter, the contents are not yet quite those of a magazine. Articles include a high percentage of personal remembrances of discovering Pérez' work and much general fawning over Pérez.

The stronger features include interviews with Danny DeAngelo (Captain Awareness), Gerard Jones and Pérez himself, but even these are not as meaty as they might be.

The theme of the issue is Pérez' indy comics work, especially at Malibu and, to the lesser degree Tekno. As a new starting point, tackling a topic with broader appeal, such as New Teen Titans, might have been advisable.

The larger section of rare art is much appreciated, although the reproduction is not all that it could be.

Pacesetter has a lot of potential, but it needs to focus its articles more into critical and historical analyses of Pérez' body of work. It aspires to be a "real" magazine, but it's masthead still reads "For Pérez Fans - by Pérez Fans". What would be a high-end fanzine falls short of expectations as a "real" magazine. The editors would be well-advisted to take a look at the contents of a similar concept magazine like The Jack Kirby Collector.

PRO: Clearly a labor of love
    CON: Amateurish in places
    Grade: C+

March 16, 2003 | ES, We Salute You!
    From Vu

  • ES and George Pérez (26 Oct 02)
  • I don't know if ES wants the world to know that he's being drafted into Iran war. Eric, have been submitting news and a valuable source of information since 2002 - we will all miss you!

Eric is also the contest winner of the name PACESETTER (this is one of George Perez's nickname). The new magazine name was chosen by George Perez himself.

Eric's 3 page article "The Force Be With You" is the first article that you'll see in PACESETTER #1. It's a great description and breakdown of George's Malibu years. As you may be aware, at the time (since I was much younger), I had no idea of George's involvement outside of Marvel or DC Comics, so this is a great retrospective.

A quick search will display 129 items that currently has ES' name attached to it!

If you want to say hello, please email him or use the public George Perez forum.

Again, I want to thank you, Eric, for all your efforts and we look forward to hearing from you in the future!

  • PACESETTER #1
  • SECRET CITY SAGA #4
  • CAPTAIN AWARENESS #1
  • ULTRAFORCE #1
  • Although the title is PACESETTER: THE GEORGEPEREZ MAGAZINE #1, it really is THE GEORGE PEREZ NEWSLETTER #4. The new title fits the magazine better than "newsletter" but personally, I wouldn't mind it if it just continued the numbering, sort of like VECTOR #14).

What's cool about this issue is that it's exclusively just independent comic works! Since most of us usually stick with Marvel or DC Comics, you can learn and see a lot of stuff that you normally don't see in this issue.

As usual, there is an exclusive interview with George Pérez, mostly focusing on his independent works:

PACESETTER: of all the indy publishers that you've worked for, which one did you enjoy working the most? Why?
GPz: I guess that it would have to be Topps because of the opportunity it gave me to work with Gil Kane, Editor Jim Salicrup, whom I've known since I started in the business, was great to work with and he even let me ink a Steve Ditko cover for JACK KIRBY'S SECRET CITY. Kane and Ditko I was in fanboy heaven. If you count the "Heavy Hitters" imprint as an indy, I loved working with Peter David on SACH AND VIOLENS immensely, even though I had trouble keeping the schedule after the first two issues. The subject matter really excited me on that one.

My favorite article is actually how the cover to BREAKNECK BLVD #0 was born. To be honest, I've never seen or heard of this comic book, but it has a George Pérez and Dick Giordano cover.

Other great articles include an interview with CAPTAIN AWARENESS's Danny DeAngelo and how he came to work with George Pérez.

The interview with Gerard Jones mostly deal with Ultraforce, but I was surprised to learn that he's doing work for VIZ Comics in translating Japanese to English for American audiences. For those who doesn't know, VIZ published the US version of SHONEN JUMP, which is quite popular with the Yu-Gi-Oh/Dragonball Z crowd.

One of the cool thing that I noticed at the Pérez art gallery, is that it has some other designs for SPACE CASES, which I just mentioned on this website not too long ago.

Anyway, there's a lot more stuff, which I can't really cover, but check it out yourself next Wednesday at your local comic store, if you haven't already bought your copy directly from Tony himself.

    From Tony Lorenz

  • PACESETTER #1
  • Hi everyone, just wanted to let everyone know that all advance order copies of PACESETTER #1 will be shipped before the end of the week, most likely Thursday, I'm getting the books bagged and boarded right now and I've already got the envelopes ready, from there just to take them to the Post Office. I had George sign them at the Mega Con, I was there all day Saturday and most of the day Sunday, a good show, very Crowded Saturday I took a few pictures when I was there, I'll send them to Vu's for site. Thanks to everyone that ordered advance copies, I really appreciate it, it really helps with the print costs.

I am now taking advance orders for issue two. I finalized what I'm offering for issue two at the Mega Con. I was hoping to make another print with art, but that just going to happen, so what I'm offering for issue two is not only will George will be autographing the book, but so will Barbara, Rick and Larry the entire creative team from Solus. With every copy ordered directly from me one dollar will be donated to the ACTOR fund, now if you want to donate more, say that you didn't want to buy more than one copy of my book any dollar over the order amount will be donated toward the ACTOR fund, so if you send a check to me for $9.00 and the order price is $6.50 for each copy, $1.00 for ordering the copy plus the $2.50 that you over paid making your contribution to the ACTOR fund $3.50. I hope to contribute at least a $1000 dollars. You'll be getting a one of a kind book and supporting a great cause, besides the advance orders really help with the shipping cost.

    [Perez] PACESETTER UPDATE
    Sat, 15 Feb 2003 00:42:28 -0000

Hey gang, just a little update on PACESETTER #1, the printer was remodeling their office and lost the prints, so we had to overnight another set, thanks Marcus, but Harold assured me that he would at least get the printing done on my copies and will get them before the Mega Con. I've got to call George the first of next week to hopefully get them signed when I'm there and get them in the mail to everyone that order and all the great contributors, I need more contribution for the next issue, question of the issue, article, news and info, it's a Crossgen theme issue. Reminder my magazine is only as good as the contribution. I'm also looking at new production additions, to hopefully make my magazine look even better. Please e-mail me if you are interested in contributing, thanks in advance for the help, TLorenz101@aol.com.

I hope to also get a final answer on the surprise offer for those who help me out with advance orders. I should find out for sure at the Mega Con. Happy Valentine

     February 1, 2003 | Pacesetter #1 in Late Feb
    From Tony Lorenz
I talked to the printers last week, he told me the book will be ready by the 15 of February (PACESETTER #1), so once a get the books and get the autographed by George, we're talking the end of February.

Also a little info, missed the deadline by two weeks on getting the next issue in the March PREVIEWS, so it won't be listed until the April PREVIEWS, that stinks, so in stead of end of April release, it looks like now an end of May release.

I think now what's important his to have the material in the printers hands so as soon as I get the totals on orders I can give him the green light.

So here's part three of what I need is I need some photos (of George Pérez) for the photo gallery, you can e-mail me nice JPEGs or you can mail me nice color copies, please put full name so I know who to give credit it to.

Also I'm going to have some exciting info tomorrow about the next issue of PACESETTER. By the way, PACESETTER is off to the printers tomorrow.

Here's some more news and update on the next issue, PACESETTER #1 will be in December Preview instead of the November Preview as I had hoped, so that means the book will be out the end of January not the end of December. But I still plan to have the next issue out in March, I've decided on George's suggestion to break the issue up from a Crossgen/Avengers-JLA issue to a Crossgen issue, then the following issue a AVENGERS-JLA issue.

Also with the help ES there is a 99% chance of an extra interview in issue #1 with writer Gerard (Ultraforce) Jones.

One more thing, I still need title suggestions for my magazine, if you think I should should change the name, what should I change it to. Winner will receive a lifetime subscription to my magazine.

I want to first want to thank Vu for the nice review of GPN #3, I'm very proud of the the issue, the issue wouldn't have been nearly as good without the major help from Marcus Mebes and all the great contributors. After all this magazine if for PEREZ FANS, BY PEREZ FANS. With each issue new people join the ranks of contributors in which I'm very grateful for, having more than one oppinion/idea really makes this a more interesting magazine. Heck one of my favorite things about this magazines is the artwork and thoughts that George's fan share with me through this magazine. So I hope as people continue to read my magazine dedicated to George I hope my magazine motivates them to get involved in future issues.

First up is a CONTEST, it was actually brought up after I published issue two and several people have brought it up again after issue three came out. Do we need a new title for the GEORGE PEREZ NEWSLETTER? Some people have told me the title is kind of confusing because it is not a newsletter but a magazine. If you think we should change the name, what should we call the magazine? I need all of your help, please send in your suggestion on a new title and the winner will receive a lifetime subscription to the GEORGE PEREZ NEWSLETTER (or what ever the new title maybe), now it I get multiple people suggest the new title, the first person that sends me the suggestion will be the winner. Good luck and I hope that everyone gets involved in the contest, like my magazine its only good as the contributions.

It is time once again, I need contributions for issue #4, slated for a December release meaning the issue needs to be ready sometime in the middle of November. The theme of the issue is George's independent work of the early 1990s and I need contribution the sooner the better. I've already have a few things for the issue, but I need a lot more. This is slated to be a 64 page issue but could be bigger if I get more contributors, I kinda like that 100 page format (most likely issue 5 and 6 will be in the 100 + format, Crossgen/Avengers-JLA issue and all Teen Titan's issue). I need the following items for next issue:

ARTICLES (here's a few ideas, George's run at Malibu Comics, Techno, Heroes Graphics, his Gaming art, his illustrations work for novels, ...and that's just a few ideas to get the ball rolling) I will also need an article from a fan of George from another country other than someone from the United States for the feature "PEREZ FANS AROUND THE WORLD," the article does not have to be related to the main theme of the issue, I just want to showcase the many fans of George from around the world.
