PACESETTER: THE GEORGE PEREZ MAGAZINE #4 (Jul 2004)

For George Perez or Teen Titans fans hoping to get an original print run of PACESETTER #4 (Jul 2004), you may want to turn to the secondary market via Ebay. But that's flaky. This is a true story of how Yahoo Auction (defunct) and Ebay basically won't refund my money when software/books I ordered never arrived or were not as described. They might have changed their policies now, but at the time, the amount of money needed to be over $20 for Ebay to even consider looking into it. Anyway, I've been burnt. I ate the cost, and as a result, I've never gone back to auction sites.

On a brighter note, Tony Lorenz has put up all his books on print on-demand via Lulu.com. This is a reputable printer that takes a percentage of every book printed, so there is not a high cost of doing an initial print run and having unsold books sit in your storage.

Since the original PACESETTER #4 is out of print, you can pick up a current print for $9.95 (marked up to cover Lulu's printing cost), or, and this is new, a hardcover version of PACESETTER #4 for $20.95. This would be the perfect gift for any GPz or TT fan in your family. For collectors that must own everything, please note the covers are slightly altered from the original print (especially on the Hardcover Edition).

Lorenz has also made it even more affordable as a digital format, for those who just want to carry it around on their iPad.

« Thread started on: Today at 06:46am »

I just received an order the other day from a fan from Canada, and he had sent me an order in US funds money order, I've never had a problem before, until now, my bank tells me they have a new policy on cashing foreign money orders, a cost of 43.00 to cash it, the money order is only for 8.00 dollars!!!!

So for the moment, I can't except any foreign money orders until further notice, cash or paypal only, until I can find a place that cashies foreign money orders. People living in the US can send money orders though, I'm sorry for any inconvience. Thanks for the support everyone.

It's so fun to read a print fanzine these days. I love the convenience and depth of material you can find on the web, but there's something that's just special about holding a printed fanzine in your hands. Pacesetter is the perfect example of why zines are special. This issue, the special Teen Titans issue, contains page after page after page of interviews, articles and art discussing Perez and his work on the Titans. It's a treat to flip through the 84 pages in the zine and find a 25+ page art gallery or interviews about the Titans cartoon or a long piece on stories that ended up on "The Cutting Room Floor" (as the piece was called).

This is a nicely professional-seeming zine. The color cover looks terrific, and the editor tool pains to provide really diverse content while making sure to include plenty of what the readers really care about - lots of obscure George Perez art.

I'm not a huge fan of Perez, but I found a lot to enjoy in this zine. Plus my copy arrived autographed by both Perez and his wife Carol Flynn! Too cool!

$6.95 from larger comic shops (I saw it at Comics Dungeon in Seattle today) or find information here about ordering it by mail.

You would think it would be a good day when I got home from work to see to packages, one listing 4 books the other the other 96, the replacement books from the package that got damaged in shipping. I was so happy to receive the boxes that I jumped right on the phone with George to set up a day and time to have the new copies signed not even opening the boxes yet. Well when I got off the phone with George I began to open the boxes, first I open the box with 4 books and they were fine, I then open the big box that was suppose to have 96 copies, well they were only 63 copies in the box and the copies look like a freight train hit them, every single copy was completely damaged, my blood pressure pretty much went through the roof. At first I was thinking maybe this was the first shipment of the damage copies. I got on the phone with my printers and gave him the package number to my dismay this was the new printing. My printers think there is something fishy going on at FX. So to make a long terrible story short. The books is going back to the printers and he tells me that I can get them in 2 to 3 weeks. I'm really sorry there is nothing else I can do. I will send out what orders I can. Any questions, you can e-mail me at (TLorenz101)

I still have a few new orders and contributers copies to ship as soon as I get them and get them signed by George and his wife, I'll will get them out to those who haven't received them. I finally got around to reading the rest of this issue.

If you buy this issue directly from Tony Lorenz (email), it comes with a color print by Marcus Mebes and George Pérez. It is also signed by Carol Flynn and George Pérez.

The issue is full of terrific articles, my personal favorite is the Carol Flynn article/interview and the interviews with Sam Register & Glen Murakami. I think there should be more interviews like this... especially people outside of the comic book medium. Not to say that the interviews with Marv Wolfman or Phil Jimenez isn't nice!

Here is an excerpt of Bill Walko's interview with Sam Register:

As for George... I hadn't talked to George until we had a launch party for Teen Titans at ComicCon last yar in San Diego. It happened that Teen Titans was premiering the same night as the ComiCon and George and Marv were both invited to the party and they attended to watch the premiere live at a bar in San Diego. And it was packed with people. I got to meet George for the first time and it was excellent because I got to watch Marv and George watching the Teen Titans and they were just thrilled watching it together, watching their creation on TV.... We are thinking of mining the other Titans to use as auxillary members [and I asked], "Is there anyone you would like us to use?" and he mentioned Bumblebee. So she will be coming to the animated Titans as a request from George.
If you are a fan of the Teen Titans or George Pérez, this magazine should definitely be on your list. Buying it directly from Tony Lorenz is the fastest and easiest way to obtain an issue, but you can also order it from your local comic book store (who buys it from Diamond).

I don't mind recommending Diamond because the more people that order from them, the less likely that they will drop listing the magazine.

Vu thanks for the comments, although I don't agree with you on the quality of the printing, I looked at the issue and compared it to previous issue and I think the quality is much better, now I wish I could afford a more expensive printing process, I just can't. I'm very proud of the issue, with the last two issue, I've added another step to the printing, cost more, but I think is worth it. I need everyone's feedback, good and bad.

There were a couple mistakes that were not fixed. 1. Danny DeAngelo should have been credited in the roll call for art that was in the Gallary, sorry Danny. 2. The question of the issue should have been changed, the Wonder Woman issue has been moved to #6. 3. Michael Rudolph is listed as from Canada not Australia, sorry Michael, probably surprise you that you moved.

Just to let you know, I'm mailing a bunch of packages out tomorrow (International and contributers). Thanks for the support everyone.

I was mildly suprise to see this issue at the comic store today!

    Notice the different colored raven.

I haven't had the chance to look at it, but I have to say that the printing of images didn't look quite as good... The text is still sharp enough to read, but as this book keeps printing more and more artwork, it gets hard to NOT notice these flaws.

Straight black and white of art looks great, it's only the colored ones (converted to grayscale) that is giving me grief.

Anyway, don't let that stop you from picking up this jam-packed issue. Never been a better time to be a Titans fan!

Incidentally, PACESETTER is not listed on Diamond's online shipping list.

Hi, I've got good news and bad news, I received two of the three boxes yesterday, I was off today waiting all day for the third package that never came. I then got on the phone with Fed Ex, the third package was damage and undeliverable, so I'm short about 100 copies until the printer can print me more which he said he would put it on priority, so I would get them pretty fast. This e-mail is going out to the people that order multiple copies, to see if I can just send one or two copies now and send the rest when I get the new batch from the printers, this would really help me out in filling as many orders as I can, any help would be great and thanks for the support. By the way I'm going to George's Sunday, shipping will start Monday.

    « Thread started on: 05/31/04 at 5:54pm »

Hi gang, happy holidays everyone. Issue #4 is at the printers as we speak. I now need material for PACESETTER #5, the theme of the issue is that this year is George 30 years in comics and this is my little part to help celebrate the event and I need your help. I've got an all star line-up so far on articles (Tony Isabella, Jim Krueger, Tom Brevoort, Tom Smith and J. A. Fludd and I'm working on several more involved), I need more, the topics are endless, you've got 30 years of material to write about.

This issue is going to be a big issue, minimum of 100 pages. The questions of the issue is "What is your favorite single comic by George over the last 30 years and why?". I also need trivia and I really what to make this gallary pretty special, so I need copies of art from you private collection, everyone who contibute something receives discounts up to free copy of the issue.

Remember, my magazine is by PEREZ FANS, FOR PEREZ FANS. So it's only as good and contribution. George by the way is contributing a brand new cover for the issue and Tom Smith has offered to color it. As much as I'm excited for everyone to see the next issue, the TEEN TITAN THEME ISSUE, thank you Marcus Mebes, this issue has even more potential of being a monster of an issue.

If you have any question on contributing please let me know at TLorenz101(a)aol.com

I've been thinking about it for over a month now, I'm making it official, the Wonder Woman issue will now be issue #6 not issue #5, the reason is I really don't want to screw up and not get the 30th Anniversary issue out on time, being this is a two man show. I still need material for both issues now, both issue still may come out this year, but most likely the Wonder Woman issue will be out in January, I hope that doesn't upset anybody, I just want to put out the best quality material. I hoping for some really special things for the 30th Anniversary. I always need contributors, please e-mail me (email) if you are interested in contributing.

p.s. Issue #4 is basicly done, just making some minor correction, this issue is going to be awesome.

I got a chance to meet a lot of nice people. And the artist that I got to seat next two were nothing but class (Angel Medina and Jim Krueger) as a matter of fact Jim has offered to write an article for the 30th Anniversary issue of George's working in the comic industry, I'm excited about that. I'm planning on having a couple of other profesionals to write articles for the issue (I'm keeping my fingers cross) too.

PACESETTER #4 is coming along quite nicely, the issue looks like it's going to be 84-pages, the issue should have had $1.00 more on the cover price because of the expand size of the issue, but since I've already announced a price, everyone is getting an added bonus saving. So with the advance orders you not only get a free print, Autograph by George and his wife, but you get $1.00 off of what it should have been sold for (it should have had a cover price of $7.95 US).

Remember the cut off for advance orders is Apr 30th, I will take orders after that but you get not free print and you will have to add postage to the order, before the 30th the price includes postage. Any questions please e-mail me at TLorenz101@aol.com (email)

    From Marcus Mebes

Just to let y'all know, I've got all the materials for PACESETTER #4 (except for one final piece that I'm waiting on a comic artist to finish drawing for the art gallery section), and I'm steadily plugging away at it. I hope to have the issue completed by the end of the week, then get it to George and Tony to proofread.

Hey, unnamed artist... if you're reading this, how's the drawing coming along?

Just dropping everyone a reminder, if you are going to the Mega Con next weekend, look for me in artist alley and I'll have back issues of PACESETTER for sale at the con. Also just another reminder the last day for advance orders for the Titans issue of PACESETTER (#4), will be April 30th. I will still take orders after that date, but you won't get the awesome bonus color print and also after Apr 30th, you will have to add $1.50 US, $2.00 Canada, $3.00 international p&h for up to three copies. So what I mean by that is if you order three copies in the US it's $1.50, if you order 4-6 copies, it will be another $1.50 so it would be $3.00, any questions e-mail me at mailto:TLorenz101@aol.com. So don't wait, order before the 30th and save and get the bonus print to boot.

I want to thank everyone for there support especially the awesome fans at Titanstower.com, you guys are the greatest.

     February 28, 2004 | Murakami/Register Interview in Pacesetter #4
    From Titans Tower

    >> update >> february 23, 2004

Glen Murakami and Sam Register Talk TEEN TITANS in PACESETTER Magazine

PACESETTER - the magazine devoted to George Perez - will feature an all-Titans issue in Spring 2004.

Now here's the special announcement I promised: It will contain exclusive interviews with Glen Murakami and Sam Register - two of the people responsible for bringing Perez's Teen Titans to the TV screen - conducted by yours truly. This is the first time Glen and Sam have spoken so extensively on bringing the TEEN TITANS comic books to TV.

"Drawing Inspiration: An Interview with Glen Murakami": Glen Murakami - Producer, Teen Titans - in perhaps his most comprehensive TEEN TITANS interview ever. Glen talks about how he translated the classic New Teen Titans to TV - infusing it with his own unique vision - and preserving his love for the original characters.

"Bringing Titans to TV: An Interview with Sam Register": As senior vice president, original animation for Cartoon Network, Sam Register is responsible for overseeing development and production of original, action-oriented animated programming for the 24-hour cable service. His current projects include Star Wars: Clone Wars animated shorts, Duck Dodgers and of course, Teen Titans. Sam talks about his excitement in bringing Teen Titans to TV - and offers some hints about what to expect in seasons three and four - and beyond.

PACESETTER Magazine can be ordered my mail for $6.95. For information on ordering PACESETTER #4, click here.

In the next few weeks, I will post interview excerpts... but the first place you will see these complete interviews is in PACESETTER Magazine #4.

Mark Metz: I think I have to go with New Teen Titans 21 (the Baxter version). The image of the Titans fallen in the know imaged within Cheshire's green costume has always been one of the most striking covers of the series to me. I had dropped Titans before that issue, but later, I had to have that one for the cover alone.

It's everything a photoshop user like me wishes I could draw myself rather than use an application to do so. George's artwork her is truly amazing.

Vu: TALES OF THE TEEN TITANS #44
That is my favorite cover of the Teen Titans by George Perez. The cover introduces three new characters, all in a very heroic stance. In each of the background, it tells the story of the character. This is definitely one of the best cover ever made!
