Excerpt:
I bought this issue of FANTASTIC FOUR on the Tuesday it came out from my
local 7-11. Unfortunately, it represents a bit of a nadir in terms of
the quality of the title during this period. Regular penciler George
Perez was going through some personal crises at the time, and had blown
his deadline on the previous issue, necessitating a reprint to be run in
its place. This time out, George had once again failed to produce, and
reasoning that running two reprints in a row would mark a finish to the
book’s sales, writer/editor Marv Wolfman jammed this issue together in
what looks to be about a week’s time.
NOTE: FANTASTIC FOUR #189 was a reprint of the Fantastic Four Annual #4.
I think Humberto Ramos' cover to Champions #18 (released March 28, 2018) is an homage to Fantastic Four #191 (cover by George Perez and Joe Sinnott). What do you think?
Side by side, it looks very familiar, only the 2018 is updated to an
iPad vs old fashion newspaper. There is evidence that it is a nod to
Perez, as Ramos and Perez are the two artists who announced that they
will no longer attend Pro-Trump states (read about it here )
Note: Champions #18 was the last one Ramos worked on, as he inscribed on
the cover, translated: "Thank you, Champions, it was an honor."
While you're at it, read George Perez's note to the late Len Wein via this cover artwork here.
Cover pencils to FANTASTIC FOUR #191, initially
intended for issue #189, by George Perez. These pencils got lost in the
mail, and Joe Sinnott had to ink the cover on a vellum overlay from a
photocopy of the pencils.
There’s a note from George to writer/editor Len Wein in the space for the UPC box:
NOTE TO LEN: IN PHOTO THEY’RE IN OLD COSTUMES BECAUSE REED NEVER
STRETCHED IN HIS NEW ONE (LEAST WAY, NOT SO HE COULD BE PHOTOGRAPHED.)
Book Description
One of the FF's top talent gives Mr. Fantastic a really new look...
as the Molecule Man! Once the team deals with this ultimate
infiltration, they still must face sorcery, Skrulls and super-powered
statues! Plus: the power of Franklin Richards! Guest-starring the Texas
Twister and the Impossible Man! Collects Fantastic Four #187-188, 191-192,
Fantastic Four Annual #14-15, Marvel Two-In-One #60, Adventures of the Thing #3.
I put this issue in the Pérez checklist, but it's not really a "must have" item. Similarly like OFFICIAL TEEN TITANS INDEX #5 is not crucial to your collection, but it is worth a small mention.
FANTASTIC FOUR #500 (Director's Cut Edition)
is the first time that a comic book has extra material, like the
popular "Director's Cut/Special Edition" DVDs. There's 15 pages of
extra material: "Deleted Scenes", sketch designs, "Outakes", Fred
Hembeck's "Fantastic Five... Hundred, That Is!!", process of putting a
comic book together, Stan Lee's original synopsis for FF #1, and a
"Printography".
The Printography reprints all previous 499 covers of the Fantastic Four,
over three pages. Obviously in order to fit all the covers the
reprints of each cover is about 3 by 5 cm.
