Saturday Night saw the first stop on "The Hero Initiative's "Ultimate
100" road show, swinging by The Secret Headquarters comic book shop in
Silverlake, California. It was the first and only time all 100 covers
will be displayed at the same time - that, is if they were all there.
Unfortunately, two of the covers didn't make it by Satrurday night's
showing. Mark Brooks' piece was in the hands of FedEx, somewhere, and
Brian Michael Bendis' entry was unavailable for comment. So,
technically, if those two make it to MegaCon in Orlando, then there
will be 99 there, as one was auctioned at the Secret Headquarters,
making it the showing with the most complete set.

Last week you learned about a very
special fundraiser coming from The Hero Initative. More than 80 artists
were asked to participate by drawing a custom sketch on the blank cover
of a specially produced "Ultimate Spider-Man #100," with 100 total
custom covers created. Proceeds from the auctions will benefit the Hero
Initiative's efforts to "provide a financial safety net for yesterdays
creators who may need emergency medical aid, financial support for
essentials of life and an avenue back into paying work."
The fund raiser has been split into four
different parts, with some of the covers auctioned in person at stores
and conventions, with the remainder to be auctioned off via eBay. The
first event is this coming Saturday in Los Angeles. From the press
release:
A
gallery showing of all 100 covers will kick off the worldwide tour at
The Secret Headquarters, located at 3817 W. Sunset Boulevard in the
Silverlake area of Los Angeles. This special event will be the only
showing of all 100 covers, as one masterpiece will be auctioned off on
site by one of the local artists in attendance!

In support of The Hero Initiative, a charity for comic book creators in need, Marvel Comics has put together The Ultimate 100,
a hundred specially drawn covers to Ultimate Spider-Man #100 from a
veritable who's who of the comics industry, some of whom have
themselves worked on Spider-Man at some point in their storied careers.
Each contributor to the project was
given a blank cover to the said comic on which to sketch or doodle to
their heart's content. As such, each cover is unique and in most cases
showcases the artist's raw talent. Covers by legendary pencillers
George Perez, Al Milgrom, and John Romita (both Sr. and Jr.) are
featured side-by-side with those of Mark Bagley, Joe Quesada, Chris
Bachalo, Frank Quitely and (surprise) Todd McFarlane, just to name a
few. Neil Gaiman also has a contribution to the project, which is as
good a reason as any to check it out.
The covers will be auctioned off
throughout the month of February at the Orlando and New York Comic
Conventions, with the remainder going on sale on eBay come March. More
information about the Ultimate 100, with previews of some artwork, can
be seen on the Marvel website. Meanwhile, a write-up of the debut event can be found over at Newsarama.

The
Hero Initiative, the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit
corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in need,
has teamed with Marvel Comics and the industry's top talent to create
100 covers for Ultimate Spider-Man #100.
More than 80 talented artists were
tapped to do a sketch on the blank cover of Ultimate Spider-Man #100
created specifically for The Hero Initiative. Reaction from the
artistic community was so overwhelming that some artists insisted on
doing two covers.

The remaining 59 will be
auctioned off via eBay.com in the beginning of March. Remaining covers
will include such artistic talent as J. Scott Campbell, Jim Cheung,
Frank Cho, Greg Land, Michael Lark, Jae Lee, Todd McFarlane, Terry
Moore, and Bill Morrison. Even writers and ace doodlers such as
Guillermo del Toro and Neil Gaiman have joined in with covers of their
own.
