Sequential Tart: Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo 2012

Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo 2012
By Suzette Chan September 17, 2012

The 2012 Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo took place on April 26-29. Sequential Tart took the opportunity to interview comic book creators Fiona Staples, Ian Boothby and Yanick Paquette, as well as the manager of Stylus Pens, a company that coordinated a special edition pencil featuring art by expo guest George Perez.

    (excerpt)

Last year's expo benefited from the official presence of DC Comics, which included Calgary in a continental road show to promote the New 52 line that has just been announced.

This year, aside from Stan Lee, the biggest comic book industry name was George Perez. There was a seemingly perpetual 90-minute queue at his table, but he rewarded fans generously, sharing stories, signing everything out in front of him, drawing sketches for $40 (a bargain) and periodically jumping out to take photos of cosplayers. He decided to cancel his Saturday afternoon panel, which added to the confusion of that day, but really seemed to come down to a decision over whether to take time away from the fans standing in line.

Blame Canada: Head sketches are now $40

The Calgary show was incredibly successful and I went through seven art pads (not including the sketches drawn in fans' own pads and blank covers.) The most amazing thing was the fans themselves insisting that I wasn't charging enough for my sketches and choosing to pay $40 per sketch, instead of $30. I was completely overwhelmed by that. And still the line of waiting fans never ended until the close of each day. Thanks so much for making an old veteran cartoonist feel so loved! (And apologies to all future Canadian fans who will now have to pay the new rate.) I will continue to work hard to be worthy of your respect, affection and generosity!

    CALGARY COMIC & ENTERTAINMENT EXPO 2012 (27-29 Apr 2012)
YET ANOTHER CONVENTION! Looks like I'll be flying to Canada yet again in April as I will be attending the Calgary Comics and Entertainment Expo April 27th - 29th. This will be my first time in Calgary, after having to unfortunately cancel a previous appearance. Looking forward to meeting a new bunch of fans!
