Gladiator's origin

GLADIATOR T-SHIRT
(1994)
Pacesetter Productions
If you were wondering about the Gladiator T-Shirt in the background of George Perez's 1994 appearance at Heroes Con... it was a character that George created.
The origin of Gladiator is that he was one of the characters in a
Nightwing detective story (investigating Batman's death). The story also
would introduce a female character called Plague. Her blood would kill a
man instantly.
DC rejected the Gladiator pitch, so George took the Gladiator character and Plague character - now renamed Crimson Plague
(after a suggestion from his wife) and published the first book on
Event Comics in 1997. Crimson Plague was published again under Gorilla
Comics, in June 2000.
George said that he lost $5,000 per issue, and financially didn't make
sense to continue the book after issue #2. By this time, however, he had
signed on to work at CrossGen Comics, and left Gorilla Comics in
December 2000.

I wanted to share this photo of George Perez that I took during Heroes
Con 1994 in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was the first time that I met
him in person. He signed me a copy of Crisis on Infinity Earths #1 that I
bought at that same convention and still have.

This is the third in a series of 4 post about my comic book
convention going days during the 90′s.
It was 1994, it was the year that Jack Kirby and Don Thompson left this
mortal plane for the great beyond. It was also the year I went to the
city of Charlotte, North Carolina for my first Heroes Convention. I
have some very fond memories of this convention. I met George Perez and
got him to sign me a copy of Crisis On Infinite Earths #1 that I bought
there at cover price (and it was a pristine copy).
