I was kept quite busy at the Indiana Comic Con this past weekend, and I
want to thank the hundreds of fans who waited so many long hours to
make this old artist feel wanted and appreciated.
I know there
were a few glitches along the way: I actually did not have an assigned
table when I walked in on Saturday. I was told basically "Pick which
ever tables you want." I've never had that happen
to me before and did admonish the organizers for this since this led to
more problems with not only line control but also the ability of other
comics creators and vendors to ply their trade with my line spilling
over into their areas.
I do congratulate whoever it was who
came up with the idea of setting my line up in the center of the Guest
Artists section, but it would have helped to have done that earlier.
I've heard complaints about the exhibitor's hall being too small, which
probably explained why my usual ticket system didn't work too well here.
Sunday was at least better managed since the show runners relocated me
to the celebrity autograph section. I was a bit surprised that, despite
my handing out numbered tickets so that fans could go about the con and
return without losing their place in line, there were still so many fans
who decided to wait for hours for sketches, autographs and photos. It
was only after a couple of hours that I learned that the volunteer who
was handing out the tickets was not telling the fans how the ticket
system was supposed to work and they simply got on line and waited, not
knowing that they had the option to leave and return at their own
One thing that I can at least take some pride in
(apart from feeling so well-loved by so many) is that I never once left
my tables for both of the days I was there. I hope that, even for
those who were disappointed by certain aspects of the show, my desire to
stay focused on my fans helped, in a small way, to make each fan feel
that I valued their time on line.
I know that this was the
first Indy Con and I can only hope that the clumsy first steps will be
learning experiences and that the fans' concerns will be addressed and
corrected. The Indiana fans-- and all those who traveled there-- deserve
that. I loved chatting with each and every one of them.
