MegaCon
It was with heavy heart but great admiration to be present for the George Pérez memorial service hosted at MegaCon Orlando inside the sprawling Orange County Convention Center. …
Though it only may be the unofficial start of Summer, it is definitely the official start of comic convention season and we packed up our Avengers Quinjetto flydown to Orlando, FL for the Southeast’s largest show, MegaCon Orlando 2022.
Comic book shows have been held in Central Florida since the 70s, and this particular show began in 1993, with former publisher CrossGenpurchasing it in 1999, and its current UK owner, Informa, taking charge in 2015 under its Fan Expo banner. Fan Expo more recently also assumed ...

A
simple marker piece of Conan the Barbarian, a character I don't get to
draw very often. This was another one of the pre-convention commissioned
sketches done prior to my arrival at the London show last weekend. Hope
you all like it as much as the fan who ordered it.

What more can be said about George Perez, the man, the legend, the
sketching bloody MACHINE!! As the London Super Comic Convention I got my
first chance to actually meet Mr Perez and he was as warm and charming
as every story you've ever heard about him says he is.
Not my
most imaginative request perhaps, but I was lucky to get into his sketch
list at all and this is now MY Geroge Perez convention sketch. :)
His
sketch list was long... very, very long, but the queue was longer, and
he was producing quality sketch work every single time. It was an
astonishing experience to watch the creative process in action.

That Was The London Super Comic Convention That Was
Written on February 27, 2012 by Rich Johnston in Comics
There’s one thing everyone seemed to agree on at the London Super Comic Convention. It was a money vacuum cleaner.
(excerpt)
I understand the organisers have someone Stan Lee-sized planned for
next year… but the question is, who could stand up to Stan Lee?
And people seemed to have fun. Even Tony Lee who began the show as a
grumblepuss was turned round. I got to interview Stan Lee, George Perez
and Mike Deodato for Disney – the results of which will no doubt air at
some point – and had a whale of a time in the process.
The show seems to have found a golden formula – classic big names
like George Perez, Bob Layton, Bill Sienkiewicz and Bernie Wrightson to
attract the aging fanboy with a fat wallet as yet untouched by the
recession, uoyed by actual name recognition of Stan Lee from a mass
market, without having to try and overshadow the comics with movie and
TV stars. It was an older, more male event than MCM, but for all that
there were families, and more women than at any non-MCM comics event in
the UK.

London Super Comic Convention: Day One
Written on February 25, 2012 by Rich Johnston in Comics, Recent Updates
Currently sat in the Fox bar with friends, some of whom I haven’t seen
for a decade. The London Super Comic Convention has brought many faces
out of the woodwork for a comic convention that is actually about comics
again. No movie studios, no TV stars, it’s all comics, and thousands
came out to check it out.
(excerpt)
The convention basically started as off Stan Con, but after
autographs and photos, the crowd made their way over. And found George
Perez, Bill Sienkiewicz, Glenn Fabry, Simon Bisley, Jim Cheung, Howard
Chaykin, Brian Bolland and so many more waiting for them. I have heard
squeals of delight from some.

TO ALL ATTENDING THE LONDON SUPER CON! My sketching policy has finally
been worked out with the convention organizers! I will be sketching for 5
hours on Saturday and 3 hours on Sunday. I will only be drawing quickie
head sketches in order to accommodate about 60 fans on Saturday and 36
on Sunday (figuring each sketch taking 3-5 minutes) It will be first
come, first served and the coordination of the queues will be handled by
the Con staff. The price is still being determined by the organizers so
I would recommend checking with them about that. To satisfy a demand
for more complete sketches, I am drawing several such commissions prior
to the show, but that list has long been filled and is now closed.
Autographs will be scheduled separately. Looking forward to working like

Program cover for London Super Con 2012

LONDON SUPER COMIC CONVENTION (25-26 Feb 2012) - London, England
Earlier today I submitted this drawing to be used as the program cover
for the London Super Con I will be attending during the last weekend in
February. It will not only be my first published interpretation of the
New 52 version of DC's Big 3, it's also yet another shout out to a trio
close to my heart. In the most recent issue of SUPERMAN, I noticed that
the lead character, as drawn by Jesus Merino, oft times bore a
resemblance to my dear Jonathan Carroll, so I decided to follow that
through in this illo. In a previous sketch I drew of Wonder Woman (as
well as Jim Lee's drawings in JLA), it dawned on me how much she
resembles my niece Milla, so I went that route with her here as well.
Then, for the new Batman I chose another cosplay chum (although, quite
honesty, it is difficult to tell beneath the cowl) named Bryan Morton to
complete the triumvirate. I haven't heard back from the Con organizers
yet, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for their approval. It was fun
to draw.

LONDON SUPER COMIC CONVENTION (25-26 Feb 2012) - London, England
October 11, 2011 at 12:11pm
It is with deep regret that I have to announce that I will not be attending either the London Super Comic Convention in February, 2012*
or the Supanova shows in Perth and Sydney in June, 2012 due to
financial setbacks that require me to stay at my drawing board as much
as possible. I regret disappointing my British and Aussie fans, but I
hope I'll be able to make it up to them some day in the future.
October 4 at 9:30pm
I'm sorry, but I will not be attending the New York show due to work demands.

LONDON SUPER COMIC CONVENTION (25-26 Feb 2012) - London, England
The London Super Comic Convention For February 2012
Submitted by Rich Johnston on August 22, 2011 – 2:45 pm
The London Super Comic Convention is a new London-based comic book
convention set for February 2012, using the same location at the
biannual MCL, the ExCel Centre in the East End of London.
The organisers are a mysterious lot, the most I could find out was through the website
being registered to a doctor operating in Essex, although that ID has
now been masked. I thought that was a good place to start. Through Harry
Markos of Markosia Productions, who also seems involved in some
nefarious way, I threw some questions into the ether, and got some
statements back. Some of them even related to the questions asked,
slightly.
1. How does a GP in Essex come to start a major comic book convention?
London Super Comic Convention is being organised by a
number of people that have been brought together for the express
purpose of providing what the UK has been lacking – a comic convention
with not just 2 or 3 American guests, but with a substantial amount of
American creators spanning the decades, from 60’s through to present
day. As such and given the enormity of the task, the collective
encompasses individuals from both the UK and US, who have both
financial acumen and experience in different fields, with one common
denominator – All are comic fans, who want nothing more than to have a
UK show that can go toe to toe on a guest list basis with the larger
American Shows, and have a show that truly rivals its American
counterparts..
