(excerpt)
We talked about the New
York Comic Con before, but we didn’t know just how many New Yorkers
have had a major influence on that business. It shouldn’t be a
surprise, since the world’s two biggest comic book publishers are based
here. Marvel Comics‘ offices are on 5th Ave. between 37th and 38th St;
DC Comics is on Broadway, between 53rd and 54th. Still, we didn’t know
how many New Yorkers have had an effect on the comics we read and loved
as kids. We’re all about bringing attention to the New Yorkers you may
not hear about, so here’s a quick look at four Real New Yorkers who’ve
made a splash in the comics business. All four will be appearing at the
Comic Con, so go out & support them.
* The Bronx’s George
Perez is among most influential artists in comics history. In his 30
years as an illustrator he’s drawn every major character in comics,
from Superman to The Avengers.
His art is noted for its detail and realism, adding new depth to
stories and paving the way for the more complex and literate comics
that dominate the market now. “Perez Park” in City Of Heroes is named
after him.

NYCC: Changeling by George Perez
Sunday, March 04, 2007 posted by Nightwing @ 3:44 PM
Ah, another
fantastic commission from The Man himself: George Perez! George will be
taking a break from cons for two years to support his wife, who will be
going back into dancing. So after 2007, we won't see any Perez con
appearances for a couple of years! As usual, George was his friendly
self, cheerfully signing autographs and answering fan questions.
Lucky me, I won the "Perez lottery" on
Saturday to get a commission. I chose Changeling since, I haven't seen
George draw many commissions of everyone's favorite green
shape-shifter. So here he is! Man, I love this piece.
As always, George is donating all
proceeds from his commissions to the HERO fund, which supports aging
comic creators in need. Whatta guy!

"The disadvantage of not having any
formal art training was that I learned as I went, and I made all the
mistakes [in the view] of the editorial staff and the fan public,"
explained Perez. "I asked [editors] why they put up with the awkward
drawings and lack of detail, and they said [they put up with it]
because my storytelling was strong. And in comics, that’s what will
give you a long career."
In addition, Perez mentioned that coming
to NYCC was a chance to see a number of creators that he owes his
career to, dating back to the time he illustrated The Fantastic Four.
"Joe Sinnott made me look good," beamed
Perez. "He made Stan Lee give me a phone call to see who this artist
was [on] Fantastic Four he never heard of. [He thought] it was either
[John] Romita [Sr.] or [John] Buscema. Thank you, Joe! And Stan gave me
my very first raise that day."

One other bit of
information Perez imparted was to enjoy his presence while you can,
Hawaiian shirts or not. Perez will not be making to many more
convention appearances for the foreseeable future.
"That's because I work on a monthly magazine," Perez acknowledged, "and I'm tired of doing pages in my hotel room."

"They don't know it's me," he joked. "That's because I'm not wearing a Hawaiian shirt."
Considering the freezing weather outside at the Javits Center, Perez's
preference for more sensible, toned down and warmer clothing made quite
a bit of sense.

The second DC Universe panel at the New York Comic-Con began ten
minutes behind schedule as the Hellboy sneak peek ran behind schedule.
As audience members filed in, DC Comics Executive Editor Dan Didio
began introducing panelists. First was "Brave and the Bold" artist
George Perez. Didio asked him what characters won't be seen in the
title. "No such thing as won't," Perez replied. He said the irony of
"Brave and the Bold" is that when he heard it was being relaunched he
was already assigned to another title. Didio then called him to ask if
he could start the series out. Expect him to be on the title for at
least the first year or nine issues. "If you like it," Perez said,
"we'll see after the first year."

Any chance for George Perez doing any
work on "Nightwing"? "Will Nightwing be around that long?" Wayne said.
There are plans in Nightwing to bring back a "previous character he
used to have interaction with."

I have comic conventions on the mind, I thought I'd turn my attention
to the convention I'm not going to — New York Comic-Con. A few people
have asked me if I would list some of the diverse panels that are
happening, so, who am I to refuse.
And, here is the list (NOTE: I did not include any manga based panels here):
