I went to the MSG show last week and had the pleasure of seeing George again! and as an extra bonus this time I got to meet Mrs. Perez and talk to the woman behind all the famous (infamous?) shirts (Carol Flynn); It was a real pleasure chatting with both of them! And to top it all off I got a wonderful Green Arrow headshot from George! It was a hard decision to pick the subject of the sketch. I had gotten quite a few sketches from George but they were all women so this time I decided to get a male and I wanted it to be someone who would be very distinctive as a headshot and good old Ollie just seemed to fit the bill! I love it!

Later on in the show George was walking around the dealer's room; He had stopped by a table that was selling all kinds of comic book props (i.e. Captain America's Shield, Wolverine's Claws). I took a couple of pictures of George with Cap's Shield; I figured you might be interested in seeing them so I attached them in this e-mail. I think a lot of fans would be interested in seeing their favorite artist with one of the most famous comic symbols ever! I E-mailed George with the pics so he can see them and asked if he would mind if I forwarded them onto you for the site and he said that it was no problem and that the fans should really enjoy them. I've also included a scan of the sketch I got in case you wanted to post that as well.

Superheroes take center stage at the 4th Annual New York International Sci-Fi & Fantasy Creators Convention, which is being held this weekend at Madison Square Garden. The show features a mix of media and comics guests, including a rare East Coast appearance by Brian Michael Bendis.

The con was cool - with a ton of guests. The convention program featured the new TEEN TITANS by Phil Jiminez and Scott Hanna.

    (excerpt)

George Perez was a guest at the 4th Annual New York International Sci-Fi & Fantasy Creators Convention in NYC. As he sketched, George revealed the Titans will be appearing in JLA/Avengers. When asked "which incarnation of the team?" he answered "several." George is presently working on the last issue [#4] of the crossover. Looking forward to seeing George draw the Titans characters again!

    NEW YORK INT'L SCI-FI & FANTASY CREATORS CONVENTION (27-29 Jun 2003)
    Madison Square Garden, New York
I too had the pleasure of seeing the man once again in NYC! It was rather strange actually...I was up on Sunday, and was strolling around and I rounded the far corner of the show where the artist booths were and there he was. Sitting there alone and sketching! I was surprised because when he comes down to Baltimore for Marc's show, he is instantly swamped!! Booked up for sketches all weekend in like 5 minutes.

Anyway, I asked if he had time to do more, thinking he wouldn't... but again to my surprise he wasnt backed up at all. I got on the list, and in less than 2 hours was the proud owner of a Hellcat headshot! Crap... I was sweating for a minute there too trying to think of who to get. All of a sudden, I kept drawing a blank...I wanted to get a girl, and one he hasnt drawn 5 million times. I also got my brother a sketch of Batman I will be giving him for his birthday in Oct. so shhhh...dont anyone tell!

As usual, the money went to charity, and he was really busting them out that day. I wish I would have gotten there Saturday, because that was full body sketches day, Sunday was headshots only. George said that ish #1 of JLA/Avengers will be out by the time March's show rolls around (Vu: Release date for JLA/A #1 is set for Sep 4, 2003), and he hopes that everyone will have at least 5 copies for him to sign! He said he's almost done all the art for the last issue (if I heard him right) and he is having a ball finishing it up.

As usual, he was/is the nicest guy in the world to talk to, and if anyone on the list hasnt had a chance to talk with him, I highly recommend going to a comic show near you to meet him in person. It will be well worth the tavel time! If anyone is interested, I'll post the headshot sketches in the files section or something.

  • I had a great time at the NY International Sci-Fi & Fantasy Creators Convention (27-29 Jun 03). I was there all three days and had the pleasure of getting multiple sketches from the master. George was there all three days too. George wowed all his fans (young and old) with his art and stories (George has some great ones) all weekend long. In fact, on Saturday, his fans were so many that George's Booth had to be moved to a different location on the floor to accommodate all the fans..

George was doing Head Shots for $60.00 with proceeds to benefit The Florida Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (George is such a great guy) He was also the Auctioneer on Saturday Night (5-7 P.M.) at the Spectacular Charity Auction with the proceeds going to the Eblen Foundation For Children's Pharmacy, an organization that provides free medication to sick and needy children.

Tom Smith joined George at his booth Saturday and Sunday (Good Pair). The convention was also giving away Two Different Crimson Plague Posters (I believe George provide these) when you entered the con. The con was a buzz with a lot of people talking about JLA/AVENGERS and how they were so excited to see it. I had some great experiences outside the con because of George's artwork. On the streets on NYC I was stopped by a man walking when he saw my FIREHAWK sketch who thought it was the coolest thing ever. (I Agreed).

On my way back home on the NJ turnpike one of the Toll Both operators saw the Barry Allen Sketch in the passenger seat and thought it was amazing. He thought I did it, but I said it was done by Gentleman George Perez.

George's beautiful art isn't limited to being appreciated in the comic world society. Thanks George!!

COMICS RETURN TO MSG THIS WEEKEND

    BY HEIDI MACDONALD

Superheroes take center stage at the 4th Annual New York International Sci-Fi & Fantasy Creators Convention, which is being held this weekend at Madison Square Garden. The show features a mix of media and comics guests, including a rare East Coast appearance by Brian Michael Bendis.

"The show had almost 10,000 attendees last year and we hope to break that barrier this year," explains promoter Rich Brindisi of Innervision Comics. "People have lamented the lack of a huge New York Show since The Great Eastern conventions left the scene, and we intend to fill that void by putting on a quality show featuring top guests in New York at Madison Square Garden ( The World's Most Famous Arena )" Brindisi went on to praise the accessibility of the Garden "Coming in from anywhere in the Northeast is as easy as hopping on a train, when you arrive at Penn Station and walk upstairs, you are right there."

Show highlights include a rare joint appearance by the entire "Bendisverse"...Bendis himself, the art team on ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN (Mark Bagley & Art Thibert), David Finch (NEW ULTIMATE X-MEN ARTIST), Michael Avon Oeming (POWERS), Michael Gaydos (ALIAS), & Alex Maleev (DAREDEVIL).

Over 100 comics guests are expected, including George Perez, Phil Jimenez (New X-Men), Bill Sienkiewicz, Jim Starlin, Tony Harris, Colleen Doran, Darick Robertson, Tom Raney, Rags Morales, and many more. DC and Wizard Magazine represent the publishing end.

June 13, 2003 | More Clarification on Pérez Commissions
From Spencer R. Beck, via Marcus Mebes

Here is a copy of the email I am sending to Vu to post on the message board:

To clarify the situation regarding George Perez Commissions. Due to George's overwhelming current schedule (completing JLA/Avengers and doing Solus for CrossGen along with convention season travel), he simply does not have the time right now to complete any in-house commission requests. Combine this with the fact that his current list of requests is well over 100 and the decision was made to take the information off of the site for the time being.

Once JLA/Avengers is completed in its entirety and George has a chance to relax a little, he will begin fulfilling every outstanding request. Every request we have on file and sent out confirmation of acceptance WILL be completed in the order they were received. Once the list of outstanding commissions is down to a more manageable number, we will open up the list again for new requests, though the earliest the list will open up again is most likely early in 2004.

To avoid confusion for people who would like to order a new George Perez piece, we removed all of the information from the website until such time as the list is to be opened again. And just as a note, please don't request to be put on the list when it opens up again until it actually does. Due to the logistical nightmare that would ensue, it's not fair to the customer, myself or George to do so. So if you do want a George Perez piece this summer, your best bet is to find him at a convention. I know he is scheduled to be at both the MSG con (http://innervisioncomics.com) and at Wizard World Chicago (the Wizard World appearance is as part of Crossgen) this summer.

To be perfectly clear though: ALL outstanding requests for which confirmation was sent will be fulfilled after George's completion of JLA/Avengers. This information will be also posted in George's section sometime today and left there until the list is opened again.
