Hero Initiative Interview with President Jim McLauchlin
Friday, April 10, 2009
My
best piece of comics journalism to date, circa November 2006. Sorry,
the “Win Your Very Own George Pérez” Contest is long since over.
Jim McLauchlin currently serves as President of The Hero Initiative,
the first-ever federally chartered not-for-profit corporation dedicated
strictly to helping comic-book creators in need. By creating a
financial safety net for yesterday’s creators who may need emergency
medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, or an avenue
back into paying work, Hero offers a chance for all of us to give back
something to the people who have given us so much enjoyment.

WIZARD WORLD, TEXAS 2006 (10-12 Nov 2006)
McLauchlin (rotates cap 180 degrees, designating his “PR” mode):
Well, how about our “Win Your Very Own George Pérez” Contest on which
we’re partnering with retailer Tales of Wonder, and which we’re
announcing this weekend at Wizard World: Texas?
That's right, George Pérez: Living Legend and Artist Extraordinaire of New Teen Titans, Wonder Woman, and JLA/Avengers
fame (to name just a handful of highlights from the Man’s vast
bibliography). You win, we fly George to your front door! If you're a
store, congratulations, you get him for a signing appearance. If you're
a fan, George comes to your house and takes you to lunch. Whatever. We
find a way to make it work, and George will DO it—he's that crazy!
SBL: How do people enter the contest, Jim, and how does it benefit Hero Initiative?
McLauchlin: Contestants can enter in two ways:
(1)
Every purchase with Tales of Wonder enters the customer into the
drawing. Each $1 spent will result in one entry. The more you spend
during the promotion, the more likely your chance to win.
(2)
Enter free by sending an email to Tales of Wonder with “George Perez”
in the subject line. Limit one free entry per person, per day. Include
in the email your first name, last name and full address. Emails will
be added to the Tales of Wonder newsletter list, where the winner will
be announced.
Tales Of Wonder will donate a percent of every sale through the web site to Hero Initiative.
The
contest kicks off at this weekend’s Wizard World Texas, November 10-12,
and will run through the end of December. The winner will be announced
after January 1, 2007. Unfortunately for George’s international fans,
this prize is limited to a winner within the United States.
I
should also mention we're holding a "Marvel Then and Now" event at UCLA
on Dec. 2 starring Joe Quesada and Stan Lee. It's an amazing, rare
opportunity to hear Stan and Joe speak together, which should be a
blast. Tickets are available at this address.

Perez chairs the organization's
disbursement committee. "I am proud to say that I am, according to the
people who handle the books, the single biggest fund-raiser for the
entire organization," he said.
To raise even more
funds, Perez is participating in a contest that will have him spend 24
hours at the winner's home. To find out how to enter, visit the "News"
section of www.actorcomicfund.org.
If I win, Perez can expect to spend some time drawing a portrait of my family – my entire family.

Check out my latest George Perez Commission.
Zauriel and the Black Knight! I waited on this for a long, long time
and was lucky enough to finally pick it up at Wizard World Dallas. I
wanted something where the angel was basically blessing or knighting
the Knight. George really nailed it too. I really like how it turned
out. Well worth the wait.

Some nifty stuff (Titans-related) from Wizard World Texas
13 November 2006, written by Marcus Mebes
Well folks, I'm still recovering from my
long weekend out in Arlington. I was a bouncer, line-guard, and
line-capper, assigned to George Pérez and Michael Turner. I'm
physically exhausted, but I had a blast!
(excerpt)
On the other
hand, I got to hang out with George Pérez a lot, and he insisted that
my supervisor take a photo of me with him. And Bombshell, from Crimson
Plague, was there (the model for the character) and she got a picture
with me too. She got her husband to take it (yikes!). Plus, for some
reason, soooo many people had to get a photo of me in my Wizard Staff
shirt holding my "I'm soooo last in line" sign. I lost count of all the
times I smiled with someone holding the rabbit ears behind my head. It
was all good fun.
Let me tell you HOW NICE George is:
while people were waiting in line to get in, he actually walked outside
in the cold weather, autographing stuff for people as they waited to
get into the convention. He truly is "Gentleman George".

Well, it is Tuesday afternoon and I have
just now found time to post about the trip Shannon and I made to Wizard
World Texas 2006 in Arlington.
(excerpt)
We got there at 12:30, registered and
piced up our goodie bags, and then walked in. I understand that Wizard
World Texas is a small convention, but I was still over whelmed! I got
most of my autographs then (Noel Neil, Aaron Douglas, George Perez) and
started checking out everything. The convention was rather void of
people, so it was a good time to check out everything and get a plan
for Saturday. We messed around for a few hours and then went to find
the hotel and check in.

THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #2 (Mar 2007)
|
Fans on the lookout for George Pérez at
Wizard World Texas this weekend didn't have to look farther than one
booth—but once found, the artist was determined to make fans pay.
"I'm here to make money for the Hero
Initiative, and so far I'm doing great there," explained the legendary
creator of his work with the fund whose primary mission is to support
long-standing and retired creators. "I think I made at least a grand
yesterday, and I'll probably make another grand today. My goal was
always $500 a day, but I'm a sucker for charity."
In a rare moment when he didn't have a
lineup of autograph-seekers toting stacks of everything from classic
issues of Avengers to his most recent work on Infinite Crisis, the
always-excited Pérez updated Wizard Universe on the status of his
newest gig—penciling DC Comics' relaunch of team-up series The Brave
and the Bold for writer Mark Waid.
"I'm drawing issue #2 right now, and the
book's scheduled to come out in February," said Pérez. "I believe this
weekend Bob Wiacek will have finished inking the book, and Tom Smith
has colored about the first 16 pages. The book's running fine
schedule-wise, and I'm on page 6 or 7 of issue #2 right now and doing
the cover of issue #3. There's also a variant cover they asked me to
draw for issue #1. Every time I'm making momentum, they add more stuff
to my schedule to make me work harder to keep the schedule."

COMICS LEGEND COMES TO TEXAS

All-time great George Pérez is heading to the Lone Star State once again. As Guest of Honor three years ago, Pérez wowed fans with his awesome renditions of their favorite characters in the monumental JLA/Avenger crossover. Now, working on Brave and the Bold with writer Mark Waid, you can catch this legend all weekend long.
Pérez started his comics career over 30 years ago. Along with writer Marv Wolfman, Pérez helped create the hugely popular New Teen Titans before following up that success with the Crisis On Infinite Earths. Pérez then moved over to the House of Ideas with a revolutionary turn on The Avengers, a book he's still defined by. But perhaps his most well-known endeavor was penciling the massive, aforementioned JLA/Avengers crossover, a project 20 years in the making that smashed into comic stores in 2003.
After taking some time off following its
completion, Pérez is back, having just finished an arc on JSA while
currently working with Mark Waid on the all-new The Brave And The Bold.
So don't miss out! Make your way to the Arlington Convention Center November 10th-12th and come meet a living comics legend!
